TAC-MAN
TAC-MAN is the magnetic holder for tacks. As you sweep over the tacks with the TAC-MAN, the tacks attach themselves onto the top of its mouth. Unlike ordinary holders, where tack points exposed to users, with the TAC-MAN, the sharp points are turned inwards, keeping users safe.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?Ordinary magnetic holders have some problems. In the case of paper clips and pins, they have no problem. However, in the case of tacks, sharp points which can be dangerous remain exposed to the user. They can make the user feel scared and get hurt.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? The most important I strived to achieve was designing a simple product that is both functional and entertaining. I feel people respond positively to product which succeed in solving a problem they find annoying, especially if it is solved in an easy, simple and unexpectd way. I wanted to adopt this logic to my design concept and I endeavored to find the ideal shape, size to support my idea.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)I have spent much time designing a suitable shape and putting a magnet to inside of the product. Firstly, I had to sort magnets according to power and size. In order to find the proper magnet, I had to go trial and error. Additionally, I had to think proper size to grap with one hand. I decided the final shape after experimenting with 10 differently shaped designs.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)TAC-MAN is a cheerful yet useful product that be adopted anywhere there are tacks. TAC-MAN protects people’s fingers who use tacks like student, salary men, workers and designers. Plus, TAC-MAN is able to hold not only tacks but also paper clips and pins. The design of TAC-MAN is not finished. It’s design changes whether we hold what metal objects. So user can complete its final design.
We were charmed by this very playful and well considered gadget for collecting and storing pins and clips.
