Silicone Shade
The silicone lamp takes advantage of the tactile and visual qualities of silicone. The lamp gives off a warm, soft glow that invites interaction, and the soft and flexible form is pleasing to the touch. The flexibility also adds functionality, as the lamp can be rested on a horizontal surface. The soft silicone conforms to any surface, giving the light an appearance of melting. The chrome-globe bulb is partially exposed, revealing the lamp’s simplicity.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you? This was an independent exploration of silicone as a material. I was creating a series of lighting objects that focused on the unique quality of light produced when a light source is embedded inside it. This lamp was the next step in the exploration.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief?I applied the lessons about light quality learned from previous silicone experiments and added the physicality of silicone as a design factor. The silicone shade is an object to interact with, to place in various spots in the home.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)This is the culmination of a semester-long exploration of silicone and lighting. I’ve performed tests using different kinds of silicone, light sources, and casting methods. A series of 6 finished lamps preceded this silicone shade. The casting process used on the shade was simplified to a conical disk. The light bulb is cast with the silicone, already mounted on its fixture/cord. When the curing time is completed the light bulb is unscrewed from the cord, the mold is dismounted, the bulb is put back on, and the light is complete. There are no additional finishing processes.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)This light is a versatile companion for your home. It can be placed on any surface, hung from the ceiling, or leaned against the wall. It is never blinding; it just gives off a volume of usable, warm light for reading, relaxation, or as an ambient light source.
Usually a naked lamp bulb wouldn’t be put directly on the table, but with this shade it is more versatile. – Defne Koz
It is a versatile table. It would make a great garden table. It is interesting in terms of its malleability that it can allow for multiple configurations. – Sam Vinz
