Rock Climbing Shoe Box
1. The Nutshell: In plain language, tell us what your project is, what it does, and what it’s comprised of.This shoe box is made using recycled paper blended into a pulp. It was formed to fit a pair of rock climbing shoes. The shape and texture has a rock like appearance.2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?The goal was to take an existing company and create a sub brand that filled a market they were not currently reaching. I chose Lululemon, a yoga wear company and created Danglefoot a rock climbing gear company. The next step was to create a logo and a package that fit the style and feel of the parent company.3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? When working on the project i tried to incorporate an inexpensive & sustainable solution for the package while not losing out on durability.4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)When researching materials I found pulp to be interesting because of its range of form. It also played well into the sustainable aspect I was trying to achieve. I went out and bout a blender from the thrift store and started blending up magazines and newspapers. It was great fun, like making paper mache as a kid but the texture was better. I used balloons and tape to make the shape. After a few attempts and waiting for them to dry I had a very strong, good looking shoe box that met the style of my company.5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)I wanted the shoe box to bring some happiness to the buyer. Maybe they would like it enough to keep it for something else or like enough to come and buy another pair of shoes later. It needed to be a realistic concept not something that costs to much. The technology is out there and so is the material so economically and sustainably speaking I think its value is good.
