PINCH
PINCH is a simple hanger redesign, to comfortably get your hanger out from your t-shirt without damaging your clothing. Through the gesture of “pinch” you can bend down the arms of the hanger and easily slide in/out from your t-shirt. Material proposed is Polypropylene and Elastomer mix.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?Have you never faced the problem of inserting a hanger on your T-shirt without damaging the fabric or loosing its elasticity, either from the top or the bottom of the T-shirt? Both the methods to put the hanger are not easy, it takes time and you have to be careful. Have you never felt tired to put all your clothes on a hanger after they are washed. Now think of the Sales person in the Clothes shop?
The above problems led me to the brief of – Easier way of fixing clothes on a hanger
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief?I wanted to design the hanger for the mass market, where everyone could use it. Hence, the functionality of the product had to be simple and intuitive.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)With the help of the intuitive gesture it makes it efficient and improves productivity while taking out or hanging your T-shirt on PINCH. Example this solves the problem of the sales person at retail clothes store to remove and insert clothes around 150-200 times average per day.
The potential target are, the factory workers who put the hangers in the clothing, sales person in a clothes store who has to remove and put clothes on the hanger, and for home use.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)PINCH uses existing manufacturing technology to manufacture hangers, which is Injection moulding. It is made from one material – Polypropylene and Elastomer mix. It is cost effective to manufacture on a large scale. The material proposed is recyclable plastic. At the same time it does not use any mechanism which adds any parts or extra cost to the product. It is a versatile and adaptable product.
With T-shirts more common than other apparel in many wardrobes it was clearly time to revisit the stiff coat-hanger that was really conceived for shirts and jackets and other open front garments. Pinch did a great job at creating a cost effective, mass producible product that could be very popular with the t-shirt aficionado.
