The bookcase was inspired by the Jacob’s Ladder toy – you know, the one from childhood where wood blocks are held together by ribbon? Made from five square wood frames that are joined with nylon strips, the piece can be configured in more ways than you could imagine.

Our challenge was to create a shelf that allows the end user to configure it according to his need or taste, without having to resort to any tool.

Low cost, because it should address a new emerging social class in brazil.

The process started by figuring how we could rapidly connect with a new set of people that had no connection with design, this took us to the world of handcrafted toys. Form here i found jacob toy, and that was the starting point of all creative process.

Regarding materials we looked for low cost materials that everybody knew about, it was easy the answer wood, the pinus its law wood, meaning that it comes from reflorested wood from the south of brazil. Another important thing was the weight, it needed to be light in order for the bookcase to be interactive

The first value should be easy bridge between design and the new social class and in second place the interactivity of a design object.
