spacklit -smart innovative packaging solution for spackling compound
The 'Spacklit' is a smart innovative packaging solution in comparison to the common spackling-package, and integrates economy with simple use. In fact, the 'Spacklit' consist of packaging and a work tool in one item. The packaging includes elastic- plastic capsule in ergonomic design, containing the quantity of spackling compound needed for filling at least two small holes. By squeezing the capsule we inject the material directly into the hole, afterwards the bottom part of the packaging is used as sandpaper, enable the removal of material's residues and creating a smooth surface.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?
The spackling compound, also known as 'polyfilla' or 'wall- filler putty', mostly used for filling holes and cracks in various walls. This material is very easy for domestic uses, but most frequently we only need a small quantity, for example: when we fill small holes after removing a shelf or a picture. The normal packaging will contain more material than we actually need in everyday use and after using it, the rest of the material will dry, be thrown or just lost somewhere.
The main challenge was to find a solution that would allow to keep the material fresh and yet be affordable and user-friendly.
I started this project from perspective of a student who moves frequently, which led me to engage in a lot of walls renovating in apartments which I left or went into them. This issue has teamed up with my studies in industrial design and the desire to find innovative solutions to familiar situations.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)While working on the'Spacklit', I checked sealants ranging from toothpaste(!) to epoxy adhesives. Finally, I focused on spackling compound as it the most common and most suitable for a wide range of walls. However, it is possible that later on, I'll make similar products also contain other sealants. For The first model I've used vacuum forming technology, creating flexible polyethylene capsule, and average sandpaper. I took into account low- costs production and internationally recognized materials.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)
The main value of 'Spacklit' is a combination of packaging and a work tool in one item, Which creates great saving material and also allows amateurs to reach a higher level of performance.
I think that a product like this, may generate interest among manufacturers, not only because it is cost-effective and user-friendly but also because it is innovative and interesting, which can give a competitive advantage.
All you need, really brilliant, a “must have” feeling.
