Revelar Product Design
PulseHealth designed a revolutionary breath test that effectively measures the body’s level of free radicals–and thus the risk of oxidative stress–in an easy, non-invasive way. Being the first of its kind, the Revelar device had gone through numerous design revisions, but still needed improvement. We took a fresh perspective and redesigned the device. Once the design was solid in its evolution, we needed to support the launch. To fully communicate Revelar's value, we created the Revelar brand look and feel, the public website, practitioner and patient portal, the test user experience, a distributor toolkit, and the out of box experience.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?PulseHealth designed a revolutionary breath test that effectively measures the body’s level of free radicals–and thus the risk of oxidative stress–in an easy, non-invasive way. Being the first of its kind, the Revelar device had gone through numerous design revisions, but still needed improvement. We took a fresh perspective and redesigned the device. Once the design was solid in its evolution, we needed to support the launch. To fully communicate Revelar's value, we created the Revelar brand look and feel, the public website, the practitioner and patient portal, the test user experience, a distributor toolkit, and the out of box experience.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? We brought a fresh design perspective. At the onset, the client was not thinking about the end user or the response of the consumer. We really advocated for ethnography – to observe the device in use and to understand the mechanics, etc. So, we did thorough design exploration to refine and evolve the product.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)
Our audience included Distributors, Practitioners and Patients, so we needed to consider multiple perspectives in our endeavor to market Revelar.
Pulse Health’s distributors had already bought into the value of the Revelar test. Now they needed to sell it to Practitioners and encourage frequent, repeat testing. They needed clear and concise information that would help them explain to practitioners the value for purchasing and using Revelar. They needed to be equipped to answer all potential practitioner questions and confidently sell Revelar’s function and vision.
The practitioner population was already awaiting the next iteration of Revelar. They were eager to learn about the new device and its value. They still needed to validate its efficacy and wanted to see how to integrate the test into their current practice and methodologies.
Patients are the end user. Ultimately, patients are the ones who need to buy-in to Revelar and its value for the business to succeed. At launch, their introduction to Revelar will come from their practitioner and Revelar’s marketing materials. In a future phase, we will design a Patient Engagement Strategy to further educate the public and increase adoption.
For the industrial design phase, our process involved a high focus on two main areas: a) user centered prototyping and validation and b) mechanical engineering. For our user centered prototyping approach we completely reinterpreted the interaction between the user and the device. We were passionate about converting what was previously a very technical and almost intimidating engagement between man and machine, into something that was welcoming and intuitive and almost fun! Through prototyping and numerous mockups we found an architecture for the device that was simple, geometric, and obvious in it's use with colored lime-green accents for all of the physical touchpoints of the product experience. With regard to the technical challenges we faced, it was crucial to have a constant feedback loop with our mechanical engineering team. This ensured that our unique design was able to function and met the strenuous technical requirements of such a highly sensitive piece of equipment.
We are in a very fascinating time in human scientific history. At an unprecedented rate we are pioneering new ways for people to independently monitor, interpret and alter their health and wellness through the use of new products and life-science analytics. For the first time ever the Revelar system has the power to bring a previously impossible set of personal health data to millions of people around the globe, allowing even inhabitants of distant and remote places to monitor their health and influence their behavior.
Revelar is the only way to effectively track and manage your levels of free radical damage. The Revelar test was designed by doctors, scientists, and breath specialists and has gone through several iterations to date. In the first 6 months of launch, Revelar will focus on building a robust database that will build credibility through validated research studies. Ultimately, we are selling a better quality of life. The greater a patient’s insight into his personal level of free radical damage and oxidative stress, the better he can manage his overall health and wellness–and the more successful he is in his relationship with his practitioner. And if the entire world can feel more proactive and comfortable in managing their overall health and wellness, we can make a huge difference.
- We were mostly drawn to this because of it’s clever integration of form and function; it was a reminder of what great craft can look like.
