Memória Militante Collection
"Memória Militante" is a non-fiction book collection that assembles testimonies from leftist militants of Brazil's military period. Development of a graphic project for the book collection.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?Development of a graphic project for the book collection.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? For the development of the identity we moved away from a figurative approach (militants, war, combat etc.), to explore the visual universe of its underground propaganda.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)The graphic project was composed by xerox-like imagery, developed in fusions of xeroxed hands treated digitally.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)The xerox-like imagery is presented through patterns that conceal and reveal the content throughout its pages — exploring the visual universe of the underground propaganda, codes and veiled information that characterized the period — whilst its cover presents superpositions of black and white hands, a recurrent symbol of protest and activism. The result is an impactful identity which graphic project dialogues directly with the books content, whilst creating an image which allures readers to come closer to a critical time in the countries' history.
While some projects incurred debate or uncertainty, this was an obvious Yes for all of us. Impactful, interesting graphics made the mark. – Marian Bantjes
