Companion
Companion is an innovative rolling luggage that dramatically helps the traveller during its journey. Its large handle allows to carry the luggage on the shoulder while getting over the city obstacles. It’s a comfortable and intuitive gesture. A second handle on the middle of the bag can also be taken to balance the weight properly.
Added to that, this smart luggage is perfectly adapted to the traveller needs. He can keep important belongings and documents at hand thanks to a top part pocket. Plus an elastic located on the handle allows him to easily wedge clothes.
Today more and more people are urban and need to be mobile. They need to transport their luggage into the city : walking, taking the bus, taking the train, the airplane, etc. But we noticed by observing the people that it is not easy to move with a luggage. There are many obstacles during the journey . The most problematic is when you meet steps. That’s why the challenge was : How to allow people « never stop walking » even with a luggage? How to create fluidity in the travel ?
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? We wanted to improve the experience of walking with a luggage in order to encourage it. Make possible and pleasant the fact to go from your place to an other taking public transport - no car. And based on secondary insights, we also added this criteria : How create a product evolving with the user needs during the walk ? Indeed walking is a sport in a way : you sometimes feel warm and you want to remove your scarf or your coat. These are things that disturb the walk and make you stop. And then while walking it can easily fall and disturb you again. That’s not really comfortable.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)To start our project, we went to several the train stations to observe people. We recorded videos and did ethnography research based on it to get insights. Then we defined two axis. The main one about improving the carrying and a secondary one about making the luggage evolve with the user needs during the walk. At the end of the ideation, we met engineers and product managers of Newfeel. They are real experts about the luggage technicity and distribution. They gave us their feedbacks in order to make it easily feasible and affordable taking in account the manufacturing aspect. Then we did prototypes to try our proposal and define the last details. Few 3Ds and renders later, Companion was born !
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)Companion is impactful because it will considerably facilitate the people journey. In term of ergonomy at first and then in term of intuitivity. The luggage is not a millstone anymore but a real companion. Then if we consider that 80 000 planes are flying each day all around the world. Some people will of course continue taking their car to reach the airport but for the others, the experience of travelling by walking or taking public transport will become much more pleasant and acceptable.
This product solves an everyday problem simply and cleverly and even with a little delight.
