Christopher’s Room
Christopher John Francis Boone is a 15-year-old boy and main character of a mystery novel named 'The curious incident of the dog in the night-time' by Mark Haddon. He likes math, prime numbers and well-ordering patterns and understands everything through exact numerical value. Through the imagined space 'Christopher's Room', I visualize book stories and Christopher's fictitious world.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?As the environment surrounding books becomes diversified, consequently, the overall reading experiences of readers are more and more influenced by it. Different readers can possibly experience their own distinctive narratives around a single identical book depending on where they initially meet the book, and on the stand point through which they decide to purchase and open up the book. I try to figure out how book design can extend of its boundary in the visual communication, not just by designing the cover of book. So in this sight, 'Christopher's Room' can be understood as the extended book design even if it's spatial project overall, since it's based on the contents of the book and it can influence reader's experience.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? The paratext, which refers to everything other than the text created by the author, mostly functions within the book itself, and consists of the name of the author, book review, and the book design which includes other physical formats such as book size, typography and the layout. Analysing the paratext in relation to reading activity, it can be established that the paratext is what is experienced before the actual text, and that it plays the role of a pathway through which the readers get to know better about books. Hence the evolution of the consumer society in the book market in various levels indicate that the scope of paratext is going through an extension beyond merely the elements of medium called a 'book'. The focal point of this project is to broaden the range of book design based on the contents of a book.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)
As the consumer society emerges, books also have become inevitable of newly emerged standards, such as consumer values and marketability. A book's contents and countless other peripheral aspects that exist to help deliver the contents, such as the book design, name value of the publishing company, and marketing techniques, are intertwined in a complex manner to create the product value of a book. Nowadays, the importance of a book lies not only in the contents and meanings, but also in the material itself and in the context in which it is published, and those are the key factors to determine a book's commercial values. In this project, I made various graphic motifs from the book stories and focused on communicating with book readers to expand their reading experience. Also, I think book design can be expanded over the medium and form of a 'book'. For this project, I started to catch Christopher's features in this novel and I'll quote some part of the book that make me inspired.
3. My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057.
11. "How old are you?" he asked.
I replied, "I am 15 years and 3 months and 2 days."
from the book, 'The curios incident of the dog in the night-time' by Mark Haddon
Christopher is a boy who especially likes prime numbers, and patterns and describes himself as "a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties". Christopher's Room is an imaginary space that is started from the simple question, 'What does this boy's room look like?'. So I brought some real objects which can be seen easily in our daily life and designed them visually focused on Christopher's characteristic. I hope that this work helps readers to stimulate reader's imagination.
Development processes of visual language are examined from the paratext-viewpoint, and various spaces in which books are currently displayed and sold are analysed via the consumer theory. Furthermore, the effects of book design on broadening reading experiences are analyzed in reference with a literary work; the book design, which adds visual imageries to the raw material called text in order to complete a book, should influence the reading experiences of readers. With the visual design based on books, the emotions and impressions aroused by the book can become visibly tangible, and there is a substantial possibility that this visualization can enable richer and fuller reading experiences. Visualization of contents of a book, which is incompatible with the traditional notion of the "book" that is composed of words and little images, can be understood as the paratext evolved onto another level, and this can be significant in terms of communication between the book and its readers.
This was a very contentious entry and it was in and out several times. We were all put off by the pretentious rationale, but ultimately we found it a unique and interesting student exercise that appeared to show some original thinking, as well as being well-executed. – Marian Bantjes
