Cafe Latte Stamp
Cafe Latte Stamp
I designed and created a set of café latte stamps that lets you easily stamp a picture or short message into the milk foam of your café latte or cappuccino – creating a personalized and fun coffee experience without being a professional barista.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?As a cafe latte and cappuccino aficionado I enjoy both, the taste of the coffee and the interplay between espresso and steamed milk on the top. Some baristas create pieces of art when pouring the milk. At home, I was looking for a way to add some artistic and personal touch to the coffee experience that other people can enjoy even without a fancy espresso machine and artistic touch. So, I designed and built a set of stamps that uses coffee to easily and quickly add artful messages and fun to your coffee experience.
3. The Intent: What is the personal backstory; why did you create your DIY project? What point of view did you bring to the project?
I wanted to create a simple and easy way to add artful, personal and fun pictures and messages to the café latte and cappuccino experience. I started the design with the following requirements in mind:
• Easy to build
• Easy to use and easy to clean
• Ability to create your own stamp
• Low cost
The design process started in my favorite coffee shops – places with a nice atmosphere, great coffee and baristas that add a personal and artful touch to each cup when pouring the steamed milk and foam. I talked to several people and soon realized that you need to have a fancy espresso machine and an artistic touch to make these pieces of café latte art. So, I thought about other ways to visualize the coffee experience. Looking around in the kitchen during Christmas time, I found a couple of cookie cutters (stars, trees, etc.) made out of sheet metal. I tipped them into coffee and made my first stamp into the milk foam of my cafe latte. From there, I developed custom stamps using stainless steel wire that I bent and then attached to a wooden handle.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)The cappuccino and café latte stamp extends the coffee experience by adding a visual and emotional touch to each cup.
6. How does your project fit into the DIY category? (For eg: sharing the process, sourcing, entrepreneurship, accessibility/repeatability, skill sharing, etc.)The stamp fits into the DIY category because it is easy to build and use and has endless possibilities to personalize and customize. You can stamp your own cafe latte experience!
It’s one of those inventions that makes you smile and go “why didn’t I think of that!”
