FlowMotion TWO is a premium smartphone stabilizer that aims to be the go-to video accessory for your phone, but also a powerful creative tool that evokes inspiration and delight through careful consideration of function and clean aesthetics. FlowMotion TWO is the result of my master's thesis in Industrial Design Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The project was done in collaboration with the Norwegian startup FlowMotion.
A design process with high user involvement gave rise to several unique ideas and solutions for this project. It has been essential for gaining empathy for peoples' goals and pains with capturing videos on the go. Although familiar to its predecessor (FlowMotion ONE) in form, every bit and function has been redesigned from the ground up to create a drastically better user experience. For instance, take the new phone mount — which started as a wild idea of one FlowMotion customer — that is both faster and easier to use, and it holds the phone more securely in place.
The new button interface is based on discussions with experts on human-computer interaction, user interviews, and research into camera equipment and content capture on cell phones. Conveniently located next to where the user's thumb is naturally resting, the interface is built for how people share videos on social media today. A dedicated switch for filming in vertical mode and a toggle for seamlessly changing between front and back cameras on the phone is part of what makes the FlowMotion TWO essential gear for vlogging on the go.
With a casing made from recycled high-quality magnesium alloy, the FlowMotion TWO is both built to last and built to support a sustainable future, aimed towards the environmentally conscious creator. A deep focus on manufacturability and assembly, have resulted in a weather-resistant construction with high serviceability that further increases the product's longevity. Combined with batteries lasting all day long, the FlowMotion TWO is ready to tackle any adventure, big or small.
The best camera is the one that is always with you. For most people, that is a smartphone. Modern phones have incredible cameras but they were never made to replace traditional cameras — they are made to slide nicely into your pocket. The phone is difficult to hold steady and operate while recording videos or snapping photos, especially when you are running or doing other activities on the go. This results in shaky videos and blurry photos — which is not how you want to look back at the moment. A smartphone stabilizer solves this problem, enabling anyone to capture smooth, shake-free moments.
With the immense rise in the consumption of video content on social media platforms, there's an ever-expanding demand for efficient tools that will let people capture moments in unique ways and high-quality, to grab the viewer's attention. In today's market, stabilizers are characterized by a war on price, and most smartphone stabilizers are made to be as cheap as possible. Ultimately, this compromises the user experience. The goal of this project has been to design a premium smartphone stabilizer, that will provide a better user experience and be a high-quality alternative to current products and the predecessor, FlowMotion ONE.
To accomplish this, a user-driven approach has been applied. User and market research has been conducted to discover needs and further define relevant value propositions. In particular, user interviews, physical prototyping, and user testing have been essential to the process. In total, five iterations of concept development and testing have been conducted, resulting in more than 70 parts and prototypes. Findings from this process have given insight into meaningful product interactions and requirements.
The prototypes and insights constitute the raw results of the project and form a story of how the product came to be. The final design of FlowMotion TWO is the refined result, effectively concluding the findings. In short, this includes a better interface, new mounts for the phone and the grip, an improved grip design, and greater ease of use. The unique detachable grip makes the stabilizer highly portable and suitable for keeping in your everyday carry. The detachable grip also means you have a mountable gimbal, that can be attached to more or less anything with the included adaptors, enabling people to capture moments in new creative ways. The stabilizer fits any phone and comes in five different colorways to ensure there's one for every taste. Six buttons give the user — one-handedly — full control of the stabilizer and the smartphone camera. Ultimately, the FlowMotion TWO is made to inspire people to go out on adventures and share their stories.
