The «2020 Oslo tram» project is a holistic design vision for new trams for Oslo in 2020. The delivery includes realistic design proposals of exterior design, interior design and user experience design.
BRAVE. FUNCTIONAL. SCANDINAVIAN.
The tram vision is brave by featuring exterior illuminating lines, making the tram become a moving attraction and illuminating the urban streets and suburban areas of Oslo. The tram is functional by focusing on a high capacity interior based on Oslo's need for better efficiency and capacity. The tram identity is inspired by the aesthetics and values of Scandinavian simplicity to fit Oslo´s modern development and become a tram that the people of Oslo can be proud of. In addition to this, the «2020 Oslo tram» vision includes great ideas for better user experience by ideas such as exterior active route information and a practical driver´s room.
The project was done in collaboration with Oslotrikk/ Ruter AS and in close contact with tram drivers from Sporveien AS. External supervision on design process was given by Designit Oslo.
«2020 Oslo tram» is an industrial design diploma project by Mikkel Brandt Bugge and Taral Jansen, conducted during spring 2015. The diploma is a realistic design vision for the new Oslo trams. The project delivery focuses on exterior design, interior design and user experience design.
The relevance of the project is based on Oslo's planned tram purchase for 2020. In 2017, the new tram model for Oslo will have been chosen, and a customization process will be conducted to make the trams fit the identity and needs of Oslo.
The diploma goal is that the delivery can contribute to the design process, either as a concrete design suggestion or as a source of inspiration.

The vision is brave by featuring illuminating lines, making it become a moving attraction, illuminating the urban streets and suburban areas of Oslo. The tram is functional by focusing on efficiency and capacity. The identity is inspired by the aesthetics of Scandinavian simplicity.
The 2020 Oslo tram is based on a multi- articulated tram type that has wheels under only three out of five wagons, enabling 100% low floor in the two wagons without wheels. This is to focus on higher capacity and better efficiency to fit the future needs of Oslo´s public transportation service. The tram is longer than the existing Oslo trams, has fewer seats, more doors, more low floor, more open areas and a wider aisle for a better flow and efficiency.
We have aimed for an exterior that is simple, functional,modern, and suitable for Oslo. The design language consists of simple geometric shapes, smooth transitions and few surfaces. Most trams have a backwards tilted front and more complicated surfaces, while the 2020 Oslo Tram vision features a vertical front and uncomplicated surfaces. The tram will stand out from other public transportation services in Oslo by having illuminating lines in the front, rear and along the sides. The illuminating lines, the modern look and the inspiration from Scandinavian simplicity are our key factors to make a tram people will be proud of.
The 2020 Oslo tram vision features a bright and open interior. The design is universally designed with low floor, contrast colours on the hand rails and space for strollers and wheelchairs. The seats are inspired by Scandinavian simplicity, which means a functional and simple design language. The suggested materials for the seats are Norwegian wood and felt. The vision for the driver's room focuses on functionality and simplicity, as well as pedestrian safety and practical solutions. One of the key features is a transparent dashboard, making it easier to see children and dogs that run in front of the tram. In order to make the tram driver less visually exposed from the outside, the dashboard is tinted black.
We want to contribute to a better tram experience by suggesting active route information on the tram exterior. With today's trams, there are static destination signs on the trams, and you will have to look at route info on a paper poster at the stop. When a tram arrives at the stop, it's not easy to quickly find information about which route the particular tram takes, but with the external screens, one could easily see the coming stops. Additional enhanced user experience is active interior screens and route maps. As the interior screens will give the user quick news and information the active route map will always be updated and show exactly where the tram will be at any time. The 2020 tram journey will be simple and easy.
During the project we worked hands on with research and user input by tram travel observation, user interviews and tram driver interviews. We followed tram drivers through their daily work and we visited the tram driver´s headquarters in Oslo. Through the project we collaborated closely with Oslotrikk, which is responsible for the new tram purchase and arranged several meetings through the design development of the project for feedback. Designit Oslo followed us through the project with professional supervision of our design process. After the project end in June 2015, we have been presenting our project to the Municipality of Oslo with the different departments taking part of the Oslo tram purchase. When the process of acquiring new trams now in 2016 is starting we know for sure that we have reached our goal to inspire the City of Oslo in it´s new tram purchase for 2020.

Maximizes ambient lumination/visibility and package, than highlights these assets with simple, exterior lighting.
