Since 1908, when Amalie Auguste Melitta Bentz invented the first coffee brewing system to use paper filters, the pour-over method has been revered for revealing delicate and nuanced flavors. To celebrate our small-lot, small-batch Starbucks Reserve™ coffees, we set out to refine this simple traditional brew method, evolving its aesthetics and enhancing its function.

The Cone

IVY's metal cone helps maintain an even temperature, which ensures consistent beverage quality. This materiality also eliminates breakage and makes it easier to clean.

We explored a wide range of form factors to ensure optimal coffee bloom and flow. The contoured grooves allow for ideal airflow between the walls of the cone and paper filter. A small lip on the outlet hole stops tracing and dribbling—creating a perfect stream of coffee into the cup.

To expand its usability, we designed the cone to fit into a variety of different formats. Whether on a stand, on a mod bar system, or an on-cup adapter, this pour-over not only looks good but functions perfectly.

The Stand

We wanted to distill pour-over to the purest relationship of the cone, the cup, and the coffee that flows between them. This intent led us to create a minimal stand that also happens to be incredibly functional.

We designed the drip tray plate to mitigate splashing, and the reservoir below it to be easy to clean. We also made sure that the stand would sit perfectly on our Acaia scales.

IVY's lightweight form factor allows it to move around the bar, enabling partners to use it in a variety of ways throughout the day—e.g., on front or back bars, or even tableside.

By suspending the cone above the cup from the top edge rather that the bottom, the eye is drawn to the perfect stream of coffee flowing into the cup below.

Take the Experience Home

For the first time, customers can now take a piece of Starbucks bar equipment home with them. IVY is used in our Reserve Roasteries for brewing and is now also offered as merchandise, which has spurred coffee sales for gifting occasions.
