Keep Me Together is an adhesive bandage packaging concept that aims to improve the bandage application and storage experience. The primary goal of the Keep Me Together concept is to make bandages easier to retrieve and apply. In a pinch, a bandage can be removed from the packaging and applied to the affected area using only one hand. Keep Me Together also reduces the environmental impact of the packaging. The flat design reduces the amount of overall packaging material as well as the material associated with each individual bandage. The remaining packaging is made of recyclable or biodegradable materials and produced using responsible manufacturing processes. Keep Me Together takes a step further and offers greater flexibility in purchasing options by providing the user with a family of three packaging sizes, each with a different number of bandages and intended for use in a different environment. Packages can be purchased individually or in bundles depending on the user's unique needs.
The main goal of Keep Me Together was to create a new way of packaging adhesive bandages that simplified the bandage retrieval and application process while reducing environmental impact through material choice and limiting waste production. Secondary objectives included developing a brand language that appealed to a younger market and providing the end user with flexible purchasing options.
Keep Me Together simplifies the traditional box by reducing the form to a smaller, flatter package of bandages similar to a folder or small booklet. This new configuration is more easily opened than a traditional tabbed box. Inside each package, bandages are arranged in overlapping rows. One end of each bandage is adhered to the package while the other end remains free, covered by a layer of protective beeswax paper. Having the bandages in this arrangement makes them all visible at once, allowing the user to easily discern different sizes and have immediate knowledge of how many of each bandage size are remaining. To retrieve a bandage, the user simply needs to grab the loose end of the desired bandage and pull. The bandage peels off of the package and the protective paper prevents the bandage from sticking to the user's hand during application. This arrangement allows the bandage to be removed and applied with one hand if needed.
The average bandage box is 1.25 inches thick and packs thirty bandages. Keep Me Together can fit fifty bandages in the same space while producing less trash with the overlapping row arrangement. Keep Me Together is offered in three different sizes: a large option to be kept in the user's home, a medium option that can be taken and stored somewhere outside the home, and a small, portable option to be kept with the user in a bag or pocket. The options can be purchased individually or in a family bundle that includes one of each. The user is given more flexibility in purchasing options and can get what they need when they need it.
The outer packaging structure is made of recyclable paperboard. The protective layer on the interior of the package and each individual bandage is made from recyclable paper coated in beeswax, allowing the bandages to stick to the packaging during storage while also allowing each bandage to be easily removed when needed. Compared to the three to four pieces of paper waste per bandage created by traditional bandages, Keep Me Together produces only one piece of paper waste per bandage. Packaging graphics are printed using soy ink. All paper waste byproducts of Keep Me Together are biodegradable or recyclable, minimizing environmental impact as much as possible.
The name "Keep Me Together" refers to the collective group of packaging options and is the name appropriately given to the brand as a whole as well as the package bundle. In keeping with current graphic design trends, bold colors and strong, simple instructions were chosen to appeal to the millennial population and the different environments they most often occupy. The color choices aim to catch the attention of potential buyers at the point of purchase while maintaining a calm demeanor for when the user applying the bandages. Keep Me Together uses language that speaks directly to the user, seeking to make a personal connection with them and suggesting where each size would best be used. The simple, direct instructions minimize any potential confusion. Packaging graphics also encourage users to recycle the packaging after the bandages have been completely used. As bandages are removed, a friendly reminder to recycle the empty package is revealed to the user.
