Designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby continued their collaboration with American furniture manufacturer Knoll with the launch of the Smalto collection during Salone del Mobile 2019.
Made entirely of enamelled steel, the design process was an exercise in purity and simplicity for the studio and the result is an exceptionally durable collection of three tables that are both contemporary and classic.
The tables have a grand presence, with large, inset tubular legs and a thick (40mm) table top, whilst still remaining perfectly proportioned - the balance between the table's curves and its high gloss enamel finish gives the product a refined appearance. Developed using the latest technology and skilled craftsmanship that distinguishes Knoll, the collection will be available in three sizes (diameter 137cm, 240x125cm and 180x125cm) and five different colourways (grey/green, blue, green, grey and dark aubergine). Edward and Jay decided to use enamelling as it has a strong materiality and tactility that can't be replicated in other finishes. The colours achieved through the process have a depth and vibrancy and the finish is also extremely durable, all perfect attributes for a table top. Smalto has a strong but friendly look, perfectly at home in any decor.
