The Impinj R700 RAIN RFID reader is designed to support global enterprise RAIN RFID deployments that need high performance and reliability. It is a key part of the Internet of Things (IoT). RFID is a system of readers and tags that communicate by radio. It can tell you what an object is, where it is, and even its condition. Applications range from supply chain management to retail asset tracking to authentication of pharmaceuticals. With fast and accurate reading of small global RAIN RFID tags, the Impinj R700 reader advances the performance of use cases including threshold transitions, loss prevention, and inventory management. Its ruggedized cast aluminum enclosure withstands shock and dissipates heat through its thermal ridges. The contoured top form mirrors the components inside the unit to maintain a compact form factor, allowing for ultra-low clearance installations and a distinct design language in the marketplace.
The Impinj R700 design is a result of its function as part of a larger system, as well as mechanical and thermal requirements. The device is not typically a consumer facing product, and in fact, is often embedded within other devices. Pensar expanded the design language developed for Impinj from seamless and almost invisible consumer facing products to include a highly-technical and performance device as the core of the system. The R700 RAIN RFID reader is the brains behind countless RFID deployments. We believed that for this reason, it should evoke a sense of performance and be truly honest in its form. The "shrink-wrapped" top housing keeps the device snug to the components within and reduces overall size for optimal installation in tight spaces or within other devices. The "shrink-wrapped" concept allows for seamless expansion of the design language across future products and component changes within. It's an adaptable design that maintains a distinct language while giving the freedom to apply I to a range of shapes and sizes of future products.
R700's high performance components generate a tremendous amount of heat, which led to the cast-aluminum housings functioning as a massive heat sink. The housings alone were not enough to meet the thermal requirements of the product, so we introduced an alternating pattern of thermal ridges on the top surface. This alternating pattern catches the light in different ways, giving the product a dynamic or subdued appearance depending on lighting conditions. The idea of devices being able to stand-out or blend-in is a design attribute that exists in Impinj's consumer facing devices as well. It is a unique part of the design language that Pensar developed with Impinj. R700's simple user communication elements also parallel the rest of Impinj's devices giving users consistent information across the platform.
The R700 stands out among its competition by considering every aspect of the user experience and environmental context in a product landscape that is often overlooked. R700 brings a level of refinement and consideration that is not often seen in this industry due to strict functional requirements.
