For 2022, one of NEMO's most ambitious product efforts is the new Dagger OSMO™. A top-seller at small specialty retailers nationwide, and the brand's best-selling and most livable backpacking tent, the Dagger series has been updated with a proprietary high-performance, 100% recycled PFC- and PFAS-free composite fabric. This fabric, named OSMO, offers increased water repellency and strength, and reduces stretch when wet, while eliminating dependance on virgin materials, and reducing the use of chemicals and greenhouse gas emissions.

OSMO is the first and only composite polymer textile in the tent category, and just one example of NEMO's commitment to innovation and evolving product design. Climate change, chemical impacts, and resource depletion are all concerns that need urgent action from product designers and manufacturers. OSMO fabric is bluesign® certified, representing a significant step forward in tent fabric sustainability, an advancement that is impactful on its own and will help drive future sustainability developments. In production, NEMO reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 5 kg per kg of OSMO fabric.

OSMO™ fabric is a leap forward both in technical performance and environmental sustainability. As part of our commitment to making the best gear possible and protecting the places where we adventure, NEMO spent two years pushing the limits of fabric development to create OSMO, the first material of its kind for backpacking and camping tents.

OSMO uses a combination of 100% recycled nylon and polyester yarns. The nylon fibers provide exceptional strength while the polyester fibers resist stretching when wet. Both are backed with a polyurethane coating for waterproofness. In addition to optimizing strength and water resistance, OSMO achieves water repellency with a PFC- and PFAS-free finish and meets flammability requirements without fire retardant chemical additives. NEMO's OSMO fabric represents the brand's mission of driving forward technology to make adventures better while reducing impacts to our planet.

How It Works

The physical characteristics of the two yarns and the proprietary waterproof coating used together are what keep OSMO fabrics dry without resorting to PFC or PFAS chemicals. Unlike other tent fabrics, OSMO fabric is a composite of both polyester and nylon yarns. Polyester yarns are superior to nylon in terms of hydrophobicity, low water absorption, and low wet stretch. The combination is already better than a fabric that's all nylon, and that higher-performing foundation negates the need to then use traditional (and potentially harmful) chemical waterproofing coatings.

100K Polybag Elimination ProjectAll new tents come with NEMO + DAC's award-winning 100% Repreve® recycled fabric pole bag to eliminate wasteful single-use poly bags and reduce climate impacts. The fabric bag replaces not only the polybag, but the conventional polyester drawstring bag NEMO tent poles were traditionally stored in. The Repreve recycled, undyed, uncoated fabric bag with recycled thread uses less energy and water to produce. There is no webbing, cord, or plastic hardware, minimizing materials and creating a straightforward solution. In switching to this 100% recycled bag, the company repurposes 1.3 plastic bottles per bag and uses 0 liters of water for dyeing. Our goal in just 2 years is to eliminate 100K polybags from the waste stream.
