AeroLyze

AeroLyze is a breath glucometer for prediabetics. Unlike other glucometers, no blood is required because AeroLyze uses acetone analysis. All it takes is a single breath. The lower the acetone exhaled, the higher the blood glucose. Acetone analysis, coupled with machine learning, helps you to interpret and watch out for dangerous glucose levels. All done by a device that fits in your hand. No more toting around a testing kit pouch. No more lengthy finger prick process. For the first time, you can test during a friend's dinner or an outdoor run. AeroLyze makes it breathtakingly simple for any prediabetics to live an active lifestyle.

How it works. The higher the glucose, the lower the acetone.

The Story

Click! I squinted my eye as my dad pricked my finger. Despite having seen my dad do it all the time, it was nerve-wracking when it was my turn. Every day, my dad would go through a long ritual of cleaning, replacing test strips, and pricking for a mere glimpse into his glucose level—a three-digit number. A number that promises to help people with diabetes to live healthier, yet I witness my dad devastated— with heart, kidney, glaucoma, and foot problems. Often, people would quickly blame his lack of commitment, but I know that it is not always true. We, humans, are built up of experiences, not just mere numbers. Yet, traditional glucometers are built up of repeated nerve-wracking experience.

The Problem

Prediabetes is life-changing. Taking on a new life that you are losing control to a number on a glucometer is scary. You are afraid of fatal episodes from working out or eating out with friends because it is often inconvenient. Running around with a pouch of testing kit or squeezing your finger for blood in front of others is less than ideal. What's more, you are discouraged from testing by the painful, lengthy, and error-prone of the process. All of these hassles are merely for a single reading. It is a barrier for prediabetics to monitor their glucose level.

Research Insights

Knowing glucose trends are vital to living healthier, yet putting it together is pain-staking. It means numerous painful finger prick in the long run. Despite the obvious pain in pricking your finger, I conduct the research to confirm and find additional pain points. After mapping out the user journey, I found that it takes 4 out of 7 steps to prepare for the invasive operation. Implementing a non-invasive glucometer will eliminate pain and inherently streamline the experience.

Knowing the glucose level is half the way. Newly-discovered prediabetics also need to know what actions to take. From my observation, interpreting a fluctuating glucose level can be confusing, self-biased, and stressful. Understanding the delayed onset of changes from activities can be difficult, which can result in stress and self-bias. Prediabetics needs guidance in interpreting results so that they can take actions to control their glucose level.
