Elepsy is a concept that was created as a collaborative project between Umeå Institute of Design and Electrolux in the context of post-Covid-19 home solutions.
People have concerns about the cleanness of raw food such as vegetables and fruits even after washing them underwater. Some even use soap or dangerous chemicals to disinfect them, and while cleansing, a large amount of water is used. ELEPSY aims to solve these problems by giving users the opportunity to disinfect, cleanse and dry the vegetables and fruits in a single product. It is designed as a kitchen-household item where they can also be served thanks to the attachable plate it has. It stands as a functional-contemporary object in the home environment and is created for users to enjoy but also feel safe while using it in their daily lives.
Problem:
The global pandemic has surely raised questions about personal safety and how we could keep ourselves from coming in contact with potential germs and infections. While fresh produce like meat and eggs get cooked before consumption (ensuring that any microorganisms like bacteria and viruses are instantly killed off in the high heat), fruits and vegetables don't share that advantage.
Solution:
Elepsy ensures that the fruits and veggies are safe for consumption by thoroughly cleaning them beforehand. Designed to be a safe sanitization-station for fruits and vegetables, Elepsy uses a dual-stage process to make sure the food is immaculately clean before people consume it. The product can be broadly separated into 3 parts: a carafe that lets the user measure the water, a sanitization-unit, and an outer tray to place the food after it's been cleaned.
How does it work?
Once the carafe is filled with water, place the food into Elepsy's sanitation-tub and pour the water in. A single knob on the product's body lets the user turn to choose a cycle and press to confirm. Once confirmed, Elepsy begins its process by first scrubbing dirt off the food using ultrasonic vibrations passed through water, and then sanitizing it by electrolyzing the water to instantly kill any germs in a non-toxic way without using any chemicals. As soon as the cycle is over, a satisfying bell-sound lets the users know their food is clean, and that they can take them out and arrange them on the external tray.
