Nest Thermostat

The Nest Thermostat is our entry level thermostat that can help more customers save energy while delivering comfort.

Our goal was to show that beautiful design does not need to be expensive. Affordable thermostats in the competitive landscape felt outdated and uninspired; we saw an opportunity to design a truly beautiful thermostat. The thermostat is the heart of your home, and it deserves to be something that you're proud of regardless of price. With a significantly lower cost target in mind, we reconsidered everything from materials to construction. The mirror became the central focus of the design. Mirror is commonly found in the home and has a distinctly non-technical look. Mirror also compliments the environment by absorbing and reflecting everything around it.

The construction is efficient; it's essentially a bowl with an inset lid. The elevated lip not only works as a pleasing design detail, but also physically protects the lens and helps with manufacturing tolerances. This gives Nest Thermostat a simple and inviting form with an intuitive swipe up and down control that lets you naturally interact with the shape. It's also thoughtfully designed for disassembly. It has fewer parts than our previous thermostat (48 parts compared to 75 ) and is lighter. We also use Post Consumer-recycled Resin (49%) for plastic parts including the internals.

As an industry leading brand, Nest Thermostat shows how a thermostat can be beautiful and desirable. We believe Nest Thermostat keeps Google as the industry's design leader and invites more customers with an affordable price point and more color options.
