The Bird Two is the inaugural bespoke scooter from the micro-mobility brand, Bird. While other scooters on the market are designed solely for personal use and, therefore, have a limited street life when used by hundreds of users a day, the Bird Two is designed to be durable enough for mass rentals, while delivering both enhanced safety and a superior ride. We approached the design holistically with a focus on safety, rider comfort, and overall product longevity. The result is an ownable, recognizable icon that, along with a great build quality, establishes the physical signature for the brand.

With all shared scooter brands using the same suppliers, Bird needed to create an iconic design that would be recognizable in a crowded market of essentially identical competitors. The design had to be extremely durable yet elegant and represent the evolution of shared-use vehicles. Our primary goal was to evolve the casual, personal scooter paradigm to that of a 'professional' vehicle.

We designed Bird Two to be used across the world and ridden by a diverse range of users. With that in mind, we designed the scooter for ease and durability.

Before the release of Bird Two, Bird was purchasing and rebranding scooters that were only manufactured for personal or individual use. Rough, improper riding like curb jumping, vandalism through cut brake cables, and theft of scooters and batteries alike were resulting in a lifespan of weeks. These issues not only drove up product costs but also contributed to a poor brand image. The is built to last and remain upright, giving the scooter a more respectable posture and presence in its environment.

Like its larger electric vehicle cousins, the Two provides low cost, emission-free transportation. Given Bird's accessibility throughout cities, riders can easily rent a scooter for short distances without the burden of purchasing and transporting their own scooter. Ultimately a shared scooter that services hundreds of users reduces long-term waste.

Finally, the presence of electric scooters removes larger gas-powered vehicles from the road reducing traffic congestion and fossil fuel pollution.

Our mission was to bring to market a design that could deliver on the promise of ecological shared transportation through refined robustness.

We focused on making it intuitive to use - its only controls are the brake and accelerator - and able to respect its environment by not falling over with the help of its dual kickstand.

Bird Two's heavier, more robust construction and scale allow for resistance to theft while its literal watertight construction with no exposed cables or screws mitigates vandalism.

Beyond Two's simplicity of form and refined details, as well as its construction of welded extrusions and die-castings, reduced costs while increasing ruggedness. We increased the volume of the chassis to improve the rider's stance, improve battery volume and serviceability. The dual kickstand allows the vehicle to park upright, and improved steering geometry offers increased stability and responsiveness at all speeds.

While the Bird Two fits the common paradigm of an electric scooter, designing it from the 'ground-up' allowed us to take a holistic approach. Where other scooters are an assemblage of various parts, the Bird Two's services, detailing, and features are all holistically considered.

We designed the Bird Two for serviceability. We created an extruded aluminum chassis not only for strength but also to allow for easy and safe battery replacement through an opening in the rear of the vehicle. This same single opening provides an extremely watertight seal protecting the batteries from exposure and theft.

The tail of the chassis rises to allow for the rider to rest their foot while also protecting the rear tail-light and fender.

Finally, where other scooters fall down easily when parked, the addition of a dual kickstand keeps Scooter upright, which is critical for the user experience, scooter visibility, and civic cleanliness.
