Gyroid Pendant

Regarding light as water, Gyroid Pendant is the pond, gathered with many long flowing streams.

This design was originally inspired by the gyroid minimal surface — a mathematical object discovered by Alan Hugh Schoen in 1970. Infinitely connected and no involvement of straight lines are two of its structural properties, which are applied and reflected through the form of the pendant. Through cutting, splicing, and recreating the gyroid surface in different ways, a streamlined and organic pattern that infinitely continues is discovered.

Scientific research shows that the same part of our brain is active when we are judging the degree of beauty of both the intellectual-based mathematical formulae and sensory-based objects. Gyroid Pendant visualizes and objectifies mathematical beauty into a piece of tangible household furniture, bringing us one step closer to this intricate world.

We have been making arts and creating designs since the very beginning of our civilization. Till today, there is no new design in the real sense. However, this does not mean a dead end. Knowledge is always accumulative and we are constantly on our way to gaining a more comprehensive understanding and perception of our known and unknown, surrounding and beyond. Nowadays, more interesting design opportunities lie in where disciplines intersect. In this case, it is lighting and mathematics.

The whole design starts with one question: how to create a stripe of light in an interesting way? Continuous and flowing are the two initial criteria. After the learning and exploration of various concepts and ideas, the streamlined Gyroid Pendant that can infinitely continue is the solution.

The main body of the light is composed of the upper and lower part. Each part is carved double-sided out of one piece of wood with the CNC machine. In order to achieve a clean look, there is no external wiring. Metal hanging wire is used for the conduction of electricity.
