The way we live and work in our homes has been evolving over the past several years. Spaces that were once reserved for a single purpose have transitioned into multi-use spaces that may need to shift between a place to relax or a zone to focus on work, school, or hobbies. Smart Design and Gantri, a premium manufacturer of designer lighting, teamed up to create a collection that doesn't try and blend home and work but allows for transitions between these distinct use cases to help people focus when they need to, and relax when they don't.
Each element of the Aim Collection has an "active mode" to promote focused work behavior and a "passive mode" that provides softer, more diffused lighting to create tranquility and inspire togetherness. This versatility is enabled by multiple points of adjustability that allow the user to transition from focused lighting to ambient lighting. By changing the character of light we can change the entire mood of the room promoting a healthier distinction between work time and home time.

Aim Task Light Adhering to the familiar profile of a task light, the swivel arm articulates in the center to shift between desk-height lighting and ambient lighting. In its closed position, the head of the Aim Task Light hovers directly on top of the base creating a sleek vertical profile and providing a diffused, welcoming light.

A challenge of designing the Aim Task Light was channeling continuous wiring through the 3D printed arm. While 3D printing is great for solid objects or organic forms, it's not ideal for electrical production. The engineering team pushed the limits of 3D printing to make the arm of the Aim Task Light a fully articulating joint.

Aim Clamp Light The Aim Clamp Light can attach to nearly any surface and provide just-where-you-need-it light turning any shelf or edge into a workspace.

Gantri maintains an integrated hardware library of 3D shapes that other designers can leverage to create new lighting solutions. The Aim Clamp Light added a new articulating socket, expanding the possibilities beyond the Aim collection.

Aim Floor Light The Aim Floor Light allows for adjustable directional light. Shorter than traditional floor lamps, it's the perfect height for sofas and chairs making it easily reachable for adjustments. Ergonomically, the head of the Aim Floor Light is similar to the height of a lamp you might set on a side table.

Aim Table Light Inspired by the design of traditional lanterns, the Aim Table Light has a swivel head and large handle for easy portability. The big knob on the side of the swivel head allows you to aim direct light where you need it. When the head is placed down, it transitions to ambient lighting by diffusing the light through the base.

Smart Design surveyed people's homes to understand how they are using their spaces and where their current lights are located. Designers and strategists noted that work doesn't always happen in conventional places, and identified several use cases for lighting that can serve more than one purpose. Each light's design and integrated hardware celebrates Gantri's 3D printing manufacturing by proving that the technology can be used to create restrained, refined forms, not just the wildly organic shapes sometimes associated with 3D-printing. The collection was made to stand the test of time, and with Gantri's sustainable plant polymers, it is better for the earth too.

Co-developed by Gantri and colorFabb, Gantri Plant Polymers are formed by combining a high percentage of polylactic acid (PLA) with other bio-based compounds. Gantri PLAs are uniquely derived from sustainably-farmed, non-GMO sugarcane, and are much safer to produce than traditional petroleum-based plastics.

While the needs of the home are evolving, we did not want to provide a temporary answer, but rather create lights that feel like timeless heirlooms with a modern, utilitarian twist. Using classic, iconic forms allows the lights to blend seamlessly into the home so they stand the test of time and will grow and adapt with the user.

The Aim Collection represents Smart's decades of experience designing thoughtful and ergonomic products for the home, as well as Gantri's sustainability and design-forward ethos.
