Lua

Too often, outdoor social gatherings move inside once the sun goes down. Lua was designed to encourage people to spend more time outside after dark. It does this by offering soft light paired with an aesthetic form, in addition to fun, physical interaction opportunities through its portability and adjustability. To transport, the user can press the top, to reveal a pop-up handle. To adjust, the user can pull the string to turn it on and off, and control brightness. By incorporating this playfulness and inviting illumination, Lua fosters social interaction outside.

Lua began with physical exploration through the construction of a series of sketch models and evolved through continued model-making/prototyping and sketching. Lua achieves its goal of offering soft illumination, an aesthetic form, portability, and adjustability through the incorporation of a lighting element, a pop-up handle, and a beaded dimming switch. These elements are composed of a variety of outdoor materials, including concrete, paracord, plastic, and sealed cork. The base is made of terrazzo concrete, which adds color to the form and houses the lighting and charging elements that allow Lua to be wireless as well as dim and turn on and off. The paracord string flosses through the base to control brightness, and includes SLA printed and painted resin beads to indicate the on and off sides of the string. The form is completed with a 3D printed and sanded PLA shade to house the lighting component, and a foot made of weather-sealed cork. Lua comes in packaging that was not only designed to mirror its form, but also to present the user with a fun, interactive, and exciting unboxing experience with the inclusion of literature and stickers. The literature invites the user to "shed a little light on the subject," and proceeds to call out the anatomy of the lamp, explain its opportunities and functions, and instruct them on how to use, carry, and charge Lua. All of these elements work together to create an aesthetic and fun form that users want to stay outside with, even after the sun goes down.
