People living in West African 'Guinea' has to live with the same amount of electricity that Americans consume for three days for a year. Due to this serious power shortage, 90% of population has to stop their day right after the sunset. Children here gather to airports where they can find light to study. However, there are so many dangers on their way to the airport.
Lampen is designed to protect these children and to study safely. Lampen is a pen which self electricity generating is available. It can be charged and emit light by applying electromagnetic induction. 1 minute of shaking enables the pen to glow for 2 hours.
Lampen was beautiful in its simplicity and use of a user-friendly technology.
We have seen the problem of (lack of) electricity in the developing world and how it hinders students’ abilities to read and do homework, but this was a wonderfully simple solution that could be executed to scale.
