HiddenRadio Wireless Speaker
The world’s simplest and most intuitive wireless speaker and FM radio ever. Simply lift the cap to turn it on, the further you lift the cap the louder it gets. The HiddenRadio’s minimalist yet poetic design makes it an instant classic. Quoted by many as a timeless design icon, it captivates the user through the intuitive functionality of the interactive cap, creating a unique semantic connection.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?Our goal with this project was to create the worlds simplest and most intuitive speaker we could imagine. We wanted to completely simplify the design by hiding all the buttons the user doesn't need on a daily basis and replace them with one simple and intuitive volume cap. We also wanted to make Bluetooth incredibly simple. We never understood why most Bluetooth devices have such complex ways to sync (such as hitting the sync button for 3 seconds, etc.) With the HiddenRadio you simply lift the cap and it automatically goes into pairing mode. The user simply hits the HiddenRadio icon on their smart phone and they are connected.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? This project represents our work in industrial design as well as overseeing and actively designing the mechanical, electrical, acoustic design as well as all sourcing, manufacturing, marketing and distribution. Bringing this to production has been an incredible journey of applying our design skills to all facets of the product process.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)We can say this was a “full cycle” project. As Industrial Designers, we went from the very first paper sketch to final production. As a business we continued the process on sales and distribution. Our process was not the traditional one. We created the first concept and sent it to Core77 and MoCoLoCo (it was our way of testing it). The response was so amazing that we have decided to bring it to production. After exhibiting its prototype at 2010 Milan Furniture Fair, we had a big design-oriented Japanese retail company interested. For this reason we spent the next year developing the product for manufacturing; from design refinements, color and finishes explorations, sound testing, board layout, engineering, certification and quality control). As the Japanese manufacturer decided to put on hold, we put the project on Kickstarter and finally raised the funds not only to complete the project, but to make it even better.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)The product represents an absolute simplification in face of overly complex consumer products with too many features. We have purposely tried to focus the user on the most import parts of the product to make it as simple as possible and subsequently a joy to use.
We feel this product beautifully translates the volume control into a conceptual and intuitive gesture.
