Happening Light
Nowadays, almost every industrial products have been produced 'completely'. Possibilities are vanished and all the products seem to be similar; we cannot put our will or intention into them. In this situation, a user only can 'choose' his item. However, ‘Happening light' takes and freezes the 'Action' performed by user. Before meeting a user, 'Happening light' is just an ordinary glass bottle covered by fabric. But when the user hammers it, 'Happening light' truly completes the light. Which means that the user can have his unique light glowing with cracks he made on purpose.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?Nowdays, we use produced things and learn about the funtions or forms of the products to utilize them. While we doing that, we raised as passive user. That means, 'Things' that we have to use are actually overwhelming us. This project is about how can we change this phenomenon. Practically, we can't customize everythings' form or function of the products we buy/use. On the other hand, if you use something for a long time for some reason, the 'time' itself makes the thing more valuable. So we got our concept from these two issues, 'Customizing' and 'Time' and the conclusion is : A product that can be completed by the user's action, so it can be loved for long time.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? We realized that light emittion of lamp is effected by material of cover. So we concentrated on finding suitable material that can be easily modified by some action. Of course, choosing the action was a part of the project ; that can be done easily by anyone, and should bring variable result to the material. Two things had to be considered at once. So we considered about ; Which action can be actually performed and is that eidetic or not, and is the result of action done on the material is good enough and acceptable. To sum up, we worked on a lighting product that can be customized by simple action performed by end user, and the result of those are always acceptably good.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)First, I researched about which action is suitable. In our life, we always turn on and off the lights repeatedly. And the actions done on the lightings reduce the durability. That daily action can be reinterpreted as 'destruction', so we thought ; how can we make this 'destructive' action to positive action? So we designed a lighting that reborns by destructive act. Following researchs were done - which material is easy to modify and the result is permanent, and unique, and easy to get. The choice was glass bottle. Easy to get, break. The only problem was dangerous sharp fragments, so we covered the bottle with soft, thick fabric. The fabric prevented fragment scattering, made light softer and contributed to the cracked form maintain.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)Shattering the light makes its own crack pattern on it, and it'll glow as it is still cracked. The shatterd crack is equal to the user's action that frozen on its surface, so the light that emitted from the lamp contains the 'action'. And each light would have its unique meaning to the owner because every different action contains different situation, time, and so on. For example, If Emily smashed the light on her birthday, the light would reborn as 'Emily's birthday memory containing light'. This light can be everyones' every different unique light for each one. It is very different from simple mass manufactured ones.
6. Did the context of your project change throughout its development? If so, how did your understanding of the project change?'Happening light' is made of very simple parts : Fabric cover, a glass bottle and a light bulb. So anyone who can get those items and has enough strength to crack the glass can make it work. Choosing fabric, which type of bulb(halogen, led, incandescent lap... etc) you use, kind of glass bottle and its crack pattern. Every factor can make your lighting more unique and special.
We love the creation of beauty out of an act of controlled destruction. It’s poetic.
