Green Bike Raincoat
Apart from designing a green product, I would like to design a product which can encourage people to have a green lifestyle. By providing a better way of keeping a bike, people are encouraged to use bike as a green transportation. A highly functional and protective bike cover would definitely a must-have item for them. With the concern of green, I designed a transferable, multi-functional and durable bike cover. It is based on the concern of using residue from factory and providing the best way of protecting a bike from weather.
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?In china and many other countries in Asia and Europe, people love riding bike. Bike is becoming to be a trend and a green way of transportation. People would ride to school, to working or simply go to everywhere. One of the important issue for keeping a bike is where to put it. Many of the people would just park their bike on the roadside and let it be damaged by rains and sun light. Its frame is easily be rusted and the gear system also. They do not use the bike cover as it is expensive and most of the existing bike cover only covers the seat and handlebars. Also, "Green Bike Raincoat" provides more than one function to user. Other than a bike rain cover, it can be used as a passenger seat at the back. and it can be hold on the wall which can help rider to recognize their parking location. In order to increase its durability, I designed a bike cover that can protect the bike from rains and sun light. Also, it is made of the leftover from the factory and the cost of cover is lower. By selling in a cheaper price, the use of “Green Bike Raincoat” can be more common and it is easier for the market to accept the product.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief?By doing this project, I aimed at raising people concern in green transportation. By providing a cheap and durable way of keeping a bike, people are encouraged to use bike a their main transportation. Also, "Green Bike Raincoat" aims at providing a multi-functions to rider other than as a cover. Under the criteria of green, the "Green Bike Raincoat" must be made of residue from factory. Therefore, I pick a soft and fabric-like material, and using it with some other accessories. Also, I had to concern and make sure the way of using it is green. And there is no extra treatment for the material before using it. Last but not least, I had to concern its way of disposal. So that the whole process from selecting materials and to disposal is green.
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)The whole project is based in China. I started doing this project by selecting materials and I picked this PP bulk bag from factory residue. After that, I did look at how people use things in their life. And I found that Bike is a very common transportation in China and it should be a high recommended green transportation. Then I looked deeply into the way of using a bike. And I found that people usually just simply park their bike on roadside and cover the seat and handles with thin plastic bags. This is a kind of interesting way of how people keeping a bike. After research, I found that people think the exciting bike rain cover is too bulk and they think that it is not worth to buy a rain cover just to protect a bike. Apart from understand how they keeping a bike, knowing the way of using back seat is another issue that I did focusing. And I found that many of the exciting back seat are simply just a metal frame and without and soft pad on it. Thus, they would only sit there for a very short time, it would be still uncomfortable if we sit like that for everyday. After my observation and research, there would be two main direction for my design. One is providing a highly protection for bike while another would be providing a comfortable back seat for passenger. They i kept on studying the form of a bike and how is the muscle lines of a bike. I did try a lot of paper model and come up with a most suitable form for a bike. Then I focused on how should the cover be folded and other details of the cover. And finally came up with the design. For stakeholder, the factory that would dispose PP bulk bags must be on the top priority. This design must be a good way for them to treat their residue and also a way for them to contribute back to society. Also, by considering this design, it would help them to raise the image in people's mind. Moreover, market of bike accessories is really a big one allover the world, especially in China. Therefore, these kind of factories would be the second stakeholder that would be consider.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)Green transportation would be now a hot topic in the world. And "Green Bike Raincoat" would help to encourage people using bike which can contribute to this topic. In sustainable aspect, it can give a new life to the residue from factories. And its raw materials are all common residue from factories and there is a stable supply of materials. The cutting of cover can fully utilize the whole fabric. In social aspect, it can provide job opportunity to the local people. People can cut the fabric based on a template and sew it afterward. Its manufacturing process is simple and easy. They can learn it in a very short period of time. In user aspect, they can get a bike cover in low price. And they can help poorer by purchasing the bike cover. Also, the bike cover can provide more than one function to them. In economic aspect, the factory owner can contribute back to society by supporting the manufacturing of this product. And it can provide a alternative treatment for their factory residues. To conclude, "Green Bike Raincoat" can contribute in different aspect. Different parties in society can also benefit from it by participating in different levels.
(Pro) Taking green to the next level…most commuter bikers and cyclists are very
conscious of their carbon footprint. So this highly functional/collapsible and protective
bike cover would be a must-have.
(Con) We would have liked to see the wheels covered a little better.
