FANs Cam
FANs Cam is a ‘free-angle and naked camera’ that can be clipped onto the collar of a sports player’s uniform to provide spectators with a live video feed of the game and a perspective they’ve never had before. The video can be accessed after a simple scan of the QR code printed on the back of the spectator’s ticket. Then the spectator chooses their preferred player using smart phone, and immediately they can see exactly what that player sees. Video: http://youtu.be/Cqnk0IBQH-U
2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?FANs Cam surely adds a breath of fresh air to the mundane. If we were to mention the two most innovative parts, it’d have to be the design method and the solution of engineering part. Take our design method as an example. By using the sociology design method ANT (Actor network theory), we redefine the problem through transforming the frame of the reference. Normally, audiences enjoy the game from a limited single view on the big screen at the stadium. But now we are in the eye of player by camera installation to record the player’s view which gave us the pure entertainment and inspiration when people appreciate the competition. We also overcome the obstacles of engineering part. For example, designers must make sure that FANs Cam is in charged condition until the end of the game. Therefore, we utilize the specific heat of metal and human skin. The rear is covered with aluminum offering amazing thermal conductivity as well as its lightweight feature. Energy is provided by a high-power thermoelectric chip generating power both from the athlete’s body and the ambient temperature.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief?FANs Cam is a ‘free-angle and naked camera’ that can be clipped onto the collar of a sports player’s uniform to provide spectators with a live video feed of the game and a perspective they’ve never had before. The video can be accessed after a simple scan of the QR code printed on the back of the spectator’s ticket. Then the spectator chooses their preferred player using smart phone, and immediately they can see exactly what that player sees. FANs Cam functions as a performance recorder for athletes; they can play back the recorded videos to review the game. They can also identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop their training program accordingly. Coaches could also alter their team’s strategy based on various perspectives from players. The design is human-centered and safety-oriented, with an exterior shell made of rubber. For easy use and a good fit on any collar, it has been designed in a lightweight and elastic clip form. 4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)FANs Cam is a miniature camera that has been designed to bring sports fans a more exciting spectating experience. Meanwhile, FANs Cam functions as a performance recorder for athletes; they can play back the recorded videos to review the game. Athletes or coaches can then identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop their training program accordingly. Coaches could also alter their team’s strategy based on views from different players. The design is safety oriented, with an exterior shell made of rubber. For easy use and a good fit on any collar, it has been designed in a lightweight and elastic clip form. Aluminum offers thermal conductivity. Energy is provided by a high-power thermoelectric chip, which generates power both from the athlete’s body and the ambient temperature. The challenge part of process is the observation. If designers cannot observe the core issue that means the solution does not make any sense. One of the challenges is about the correlation between Internet Connection and Motion Capture. We know the common sense: The better image quality users demand the faster the network speed we need. That is to say, designers have to find the balance point maintaining not only the resolution but also the bandwidth. However, we optimize both requirements by developing the suitable algorithm of data transferring for FANs Can and smart phone. Then the spectator chooses their preferred player using their smart phone, and immediately they can see exactly what that player sees. We believe that FANs Cam, which is not just a consumer product but an awesome art piece that spices up your mobile life in sports, provides audience unique personal experience when appreciating each competition. 1. Silicone e. Aluminum f. PCB (Printed Circuit Board) B. Prototype (consider the form only) a. ABS b. Acrylic c. Silicone d. PP (Polypropylene)
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)1. For products in distribution: Talking about the FANs Cam, a miniature camera that has been designed to bring sports fans a more exciting spectating experience, considers the placement, functionality and form. The product is in the process of evaluation production. If the design were on the market, we hope it is not only available for sports players but also for children or the elderly whose family members can take care of them through smart phone in the near future. 2. Technical obstacles: Power, Internet and Motion Capture. Designers make sure that FANs Cam is in charged condition until the end of the game. Therefore, we come up with the idea by using specific heat that the rear is consisted of aluminum offering amazing thermal conductivity as well as its lightweight feature. Energy is provided by a high-power thermoelectric chip generating power both from the athlete’s body and the ambient temperature. Another one is the correlation between Internet and Motion Capture. We develop the optimized algorithm to maintain not only image quality but also data transferring speed for FANs Can and smart phones.
The jury notes the potential of this project in gaining a wide ranging of commercial interest. Although at lot of consideration had gone into designing the form of the object, we would have liked to have seen more exploration of the viewer experience and how it might fit into the current sports media ecosystem.
