2. The Brief: Summarize the problem you set out to solve. What was the context for the project, and what was the challenge posed to you?Quintero Leather is a family company located in Colombia with over 35 years experience in the art of manufacturing leather goods, its products are exported to different international markets. When the second generation of the family, formed by two industrial Designers from I.E.D. Milano, joined the company they decide to change the design and development of traditional leather goods and after extensive research of the market for leather accessories, they focus the QUINTERO brand towards a modern market segment, people who have an extensive relationship with technology and move everyday in the city. Therefore the brief of this project was to design "containers" that are adapted to the current needs of people living in the cities.
3. The Intent: What point of view did you bring to the project, and were there additional criteria that you added to the brief? In the research phase we realized that leather accessories such as bags, laptop cases, wallets... have not evolved with the social changes brought by all the actual technological advances, and most of these products are not intended to fully meet the needs of people interacting in the city. For this project we concentrated our research on the city of Bogota , an 8 million people city, capital and economic center of Colombia, with very particular characteristics of mobility: strong traffic congestion mitigation policies, a slow ongoing modernization of public transportation and a growing use of bicycles and motorbikes. This analysis allowed us to develop products on a deep local level with the ability to make it compatible with many other world cities (local-global). Our intention could be summarized in the following sentence: "We design containers to move in the city"
4. The Process: Describe the rigor that informed your project. (Research, ethnography, subject matter experts, materials exploration, technology, iteration, testing, etc., as applicable.) What stakeholder interests did you consider? (Audience, business, organization, labor, manufacturing, distribution, etc., as applicable)The process was created with the goal of "designing containers to move in the city." Our environment is Bogotá, cosmopolitan city of 8 million people with very particular characteristics of mobility. In order to define our target market we took as reference a consumer trend study conducted by the Future Concept Lab Milano in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá. From this study we constructed a female and male profile of the "QUINTERO user", identifying important information such as: Items used diary, way of transportation in the city, objects that are carried often, activities in their free time, their concerns and their daily routines. Through interviews, surveys and focus groups we were able to identify that leather accessories such as laptop cases, wallets and bags from different brands in the market were not up to the current needs especially as they relates to technology. After this analisis, we identified the strongest shortcomings from the current leather products, and they became the major points of product development. The product development process begins with three proposals developed by the design team, which after the prototype stage and user validation are synthesized in one final product. Product aesthetics: Urban icons were analyzed to create a local identity through pointillism and was made through automated cutting technology CAD CAM. Knowing the extensive interaction that our user has with technology we incorporated a graphic icon language, which explains the functions of the products in a direct way.
5. The Value: How does your project earn its keep in the world? What is its value? What is its impact? (Social, educational, economic, paradigm-shifting, sustainable, environmental, cultural, gladdening, etc.)Our project has the following values: · Oxygenates the traditional leather sector. · Generates local employment. · Integrates the use of technology with the "handmade" · Rejuvenates the imaginary of leather. · Invites younger users to discover the benefits of leather.
These “containers” are beautifully made and solve a lot of organizational issues we personally have and appears to be a handy way to store headphones and straps that can be used in a variety of ways. While we may have seen similar wallet/organizers on the market, this one is thoughtful and beautifully designed.
