The Wavy Lamp was designed as part of an experiment to see whether or not additive manufacturing could be utilized as a viable option for consumer products.
Initially a small project as part of Henry Yoo's "Digital Ideation" course at Pratt Institute, the scope quickly expanded as actual orders started to come in, forcing the experiment to prove itself in real life.
1000 units later, it is clear that it has. With two new variations making use of the modularity of the initial design, there is more growth to come. The experiment will continue!
Birds of a feather flock together. Opposites attract. Both are diametrically opposed. And yet, we accept both as truths.
The Wavy Lamp embodies a duality that is inextricably embedded in its creator's identity. Born from a heritage of humble beginnings, yet raised among abundance. Designer by training, and yet engineer by trade. It's a tension that can trouble or inspire.
The Wavy Lamp embraces this tension and manifests itself in a harmony of digital composition and organic composite. Using heat-resistant corn plastic, Sean uses additive manufacturing techniques to create something that accepts shapelessness as its fate and yet stands proud in its state.
Modeled on a jellyfish from the Pacific Ocean, this wiggly wonder finds itself stationary, yet in motion. These prehistoric creatures manifested by modern manufacturing embody Sean's mission to systematically produce sustainable products that stretch the boundaries of manufacturable form. It is Sean's belief that traditional manufacturing in tandem with machine-based software can challenge our assumptions on the types of products that can be produced sustainably at scale.
This is the second natural material, machine-driven manufacturing product that the Brooklyn, NY-based designer has launched, almost instantly selling out its inventory. With the portability of the design, the studio's intention is also to illustrate the scalability of its processes by showing the speed at which it can set up additional printers to meet demand.
The Wavy Lamp is just the first of Sean's case studies in demonstrating that software and material can be combined to create products that people love.
