AirPop links a person’s environment to their internal health, a new paradigm in digital health. We are innovating the category of Air Wearables for personal and public health with our smart air pollution mask and integrated breathing sensor system.Designed specifically for China and India first, the category has global potential.
Air Wearables are intelligent facemasks that filter airborne pollution and contaminants (bacteria, particulate & viral matter - down to PM0.3µm) and include sensing capability or novel data capture to better correlate air pollution with human health effect such that individual/public health insights or preventative benefits are generated.
Air wearables live at the boundary between outside air and internal respiration. They capture specific breath data, via a discreet digital valve in the mask, along with real-time, contextual and user data to derive novel health insights.
AirPop amplifies the potential to noninvasively identify biomarkers that are indicative of metabolic functions to monitor, manage or predict health outcomes, i.e. cardiopulmonary and respiratory disease for large, captive populations confronting ambient particulate matter pollution.
Unlike most consumer wearables that haven’t managed to meaningfully change our health outcomes through fitness and quantifying inputs/ouputs, AirPop’s Air Wearable aims to do something more fundamentally valuable - connect the health of a person’s environment to their internal health to provide feedback and guidance based on their protection quotient and respiration activity.
Anthropogenic air pollution, especially airborne particulate matter (PM), is now recognized as an epidemiologically significant health threat by most countries in the world. Man-made air pollution disproportionately affects those in developing and low-income markets, essentially half of the world’s population. While China and India, two of the countries with the worst persistent ambient air quality index scores annually, are making strides to regulate the causes of air pollution, there are not accessible, affordable and efficacious consumer solutions available to deal with the effects of outdoor air pollution.
The WHO reported that in 2012 around 7 million people died - one in eight of total global deaths – as a result of air pollution exposure. This finding more than doubles previous estimates and confirms that air pollution is now the world’s largest single environmental health risk. Furthermore, in China alone, outdoor air pollution contributed to 1.2 million premature deaths in China in 2010, nearly 40 percent of the global total, according to a separate scientific study whose analysis was presented in the 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study. Figured another way, the researchers said, China’s toll from pollution was the loss of 25 million healthy years of life from the population.1
AirPop DeepBreath, the cloud-based, digital insights platform anticipates novel value creation in consumer disease management, preventative consumer health and innovative new diagnostics in addition to healthy lifestyle knowledge tools.
AirPop fundamentally redefines the relationship we have with our urban atmosphere. Featuring the most advanced ergonomic design, wearable innovations in breathable materials, high efficiency filtration, lightweight construction and integrated digital sensing. AirPop’s intelligent product system learns and adapts to the wearer and her environs, provides feedback and deepens understanding through personalized guidance.
Environment + Health Impact - Air Wearables go deeper than traditional wearables by measuring respiration - an involuntary and unconscious action - as well as filtering pollutants from entering the body. Unlike step count or heart rate, respiratory health is a function of one’s exposure level to local air pollution. By correlating environmental, activity and respiratory data, users can begin to understand how appropriate protection improves their long term health trends.
Consumer awareness of the invisible threat is rising because of smartphone apps that show local air quality levels. These daily air quality indices are misleading, however, because they emphasize short term, moment-in-time readings that average multiple pollutants into a composite number. This leaves users unaware that it is long term chronic exposure that leads to asthma, heart disease and lung cancer.
Better Biometrics - Breath capture, or breathomics, is a new frontier in early discovery for respiratory, cardio-vascular and even nervous system irregularities. Air Wearables like AirPop are poised to unlock deep insight into individual and public health for targeted large scale populations and environs, especially useful for children and at-risk groups. The integrated Sensor, called Halo, clips into the mask and reads the user’s exhaled air.
The AirPop App detects the user’s protection rating in their location. It also monitors the filter usage and life, alerting the user of the ideal time to replace it. Additionally the app provides guidance and planning tips for future protection through the air quality forecast feature and alerts sent to the smartphone.
Dynamic Sensing: AirPop automatically starts recording when it detects user breathing, cpaturing 5 attributes - breath rate, air volume, temperature, humidity and air pressure.
Ergonomic & Adaptive Fit: Designed for Asian faces using an anthropometric dataset compiled by digitally scanning over 3000 Chinese heads. Featuring a patented 360 Light Touch Seal that has a double membrane, is medical-grade and hygienic. Thin, flexible & skin soft for continuous comfort, it forms an adhesion-like contact with the skin.
In China, wearing masks is commonplace but available products are ineffectual due to poor performance, misuse or miseducation by consumers. There are thousands of masks claiming to protect from the most dangerous type of particulate matter, PM2.5. But the vast majority are inappropriate or inadequate for the threat of air pollution.
Unparalleled Protection: AirPop air wearables are rated 99.97% efficiency for PM0.3 which is almost 10x smaller than other consumer mask filtration ratings of PM2.5. We meet the FDA material safety standards: FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. We are certififed under the following air quality product standards: GB/T32610-2016 B, FZ/T 62024-2014, T/CTCA 1-2015-F95, GB2626-2006 KN95.
