Sadly, serious contaminants such as fracking chemicals, pharmaceuticals and even E. coli contamination are turning up in our "potable" water.

Here at GRAYL® headquarters in rainy Seattle, our comparatively clean and abundant water still contains added chlorine, trace amounts of arsenic and lead. We have dared to imagine that it should be possible to avoid both immediate and cumulative water hazards, and we've now made that simple to achieve.

THE MISSION

GRAYL® was inspired by CEO and Founder Nancie Weston's concerns about plastic pollution and the poor quality and taste of water she experienced while traveling.

Nancie’s goal was to create a unique water filtration system that used high-end materials (specifically stainless steel) and worked like a French Press. She found most other filtration systems hard to use or limited for very specific purposes (such as a pump for backpacking that was not feasible to use in an office setting while traveling internationally for meetings). When Nancie met Travis Merrigan, the two formed a business partnership and the real vision of GRAYL started taking shape.

Team GRAYL set out to design and build a line of filtration products that utilized the highest quality materials and cutting-edge filtration technology. The inspiration crystalized around two fundamental design aspects:
1. A fill, press, drink mechanism that is completely different and easier to use than our competitors
2. Interchangeable filters and purifiers that create a flexible and versatile system, ready for whatever you are.

We faced two primary design challenges: 1. Creating an entirely new method for pushing water across a filter, 2. Optimizing the design and sharpening QA/QC. The first challenge required both creative and analytical thinking. Three design types pre-existed GRAYL- suck and squeeze, pumps and hoses, and gravity. We set out to make a completely different system, which took a great deal of experimentation, prototyping and collaboration with designers, engineers and suppliers. Tolerances were tight, so we worked hard with our factories to optimize design, adjust tooling and create QA methodology so every product was as good as our best product.

In Fall 2014, GRAYL launched the Quest Water Filtration Cup (hybrid steel-plastic), plus the interchangeable Tap, Trail, Travel system: "A Filter for All Occasions".

GRAYL TECHNOLOGY

GRAYL utilizes advanced filter mediums, which filter quickly and are effective against:

• Water-borne pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa)
• Industrial chemicals (pesticides, organic chemicals, many heavy metals)
• Flavor/odor (chlorine, ammonia, iodine)

GRAYL’s replaceable Filters and Purifiers incorporate superior filtration technology for every type of water. All filters remove chemicals and elements that affect health, flavor and odor.

The Trail Filter and Travel Purifier are effective against water-borne pathogens that cause human sickness. How they work:

• Micro glass fibers provide a three-dimensional matrix for the rest of the technology and allow for high water flow rates.
• Nanotechnology absorb pathogens using high electrostatic charge and very large surface area.
• Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has a very high surface area to reduce foul-tasting contaminants from water. The carbon is derived from natural coconut husks.
• An anti-microbial agent prevents bacterial and mold growth on the damp filter between uses.

The Tap Filter utilizes Activated Carbon Fiber (ACF), a new technological advance to the ancient activated carbon technology. ACF consists of microscopic activated carbon attached to many nano-strands of inert plastic. The resulting fiber extracts more impurities from water more quickly than standard granulated or block activated carbon.

PERFORMANCE – Three interchangeable filters --Tap, Trail and Travel-- provide convenient and effective water solutions for every customer’s needs. All filters are effective against certain heavy metals and chemicals (Chlorine, BPA, Penicillin, Lead) that affect health, flavor and odor. The Tap Filter is designed for use with municipal water systems. The Trail Filter also removes 99.99% of bacteria (E. coli and Salmonella) and 99.94% of protozoan cysts (Giardia, Cryptosporidium). The Purifier removes 99.999+% of bacteria, protozoa cysts and viruses (Hepatitis A, SARS). Tested according to NSF/ANSI standards 42 + 53.

Bottled/packaged water retail sales in the United States has reached $22 billion. This amounts to 50 billion plastic bottles annually, which have less than a 20% estimated recycle rate. Plastic bottles take 700-1000 years to decompose and each 16 oz. water bottle requires 4 oz. of oil to manufacture, transport and refrigerate.
