Project Overview

At Syrp, we are all about helping film makers tell amazing stories through better films. Telling our stories through film is a key part of sharing our journeys, understanding our diversity, and spreading life's amusements.

Our passion lies with the films our products help make, and our goal is to design products that barely exist. They are essential tools, with a user experience that is simple and rewarding but never distracts from the creative workflow of the film maker.

The Magic Carpet is all about getting that perfectly smooth tracking shot. Giving you a sense of depth to your scene.

It's a simple, elegant, and durable slider for producing silky smooth, professional tracking movements. It is designed and engineered with the film-maker in mind and is the perfect lightweight solution for manual tracking shots in studio or on location. With completely tool less set-up, quick release adjustable legs, a counter weight roller for vertical shots, and high precision ball bearing rollers, the Magic Carpet is ready for quick set-up and precision film-making. It's is motion control ready and includes everything you need to quickly add full robotic motion control to your tracking moves.

The magic carpet was designed for independent film makers looking for a portable simple to use system to get tracking shots. It sets the new benchmark in performance and usability for independent film-making tools.

Project Details

The Magic Carpet was designed to seamlessly integrate in to a film makers work flow. There was a big focus on simplicity in design and removing the need for tools during set-up. The current system comes in two aluminium lengths and has additional compatible extensions planned for release, as well as a carbon fibre version. All which use the same carriage and end caps.

BUTTERY SMOOTH CAMERA MOVES
With a full roller bearing carriage and lightweight construction the Magic Carpet is extremely portable and is an essential tool for smooth manual tracking shots all the way from entry level DSLRs up to Red Epics. Self-aligning wheels insure secure friction free movement under any load conditions.

MOTION CONTROL READY
Add amazing production value to your films! The Magic Carpet comes motion control ready with integrated rope attachments for the Genie. Shoot ultra smooth motion control time-lapse and real-time video with minimal setup time.

LOCKABLE BRAKE
The Magic Carpet Carriage comes equip with a lockable brake for safe transport and portability.

QUICK RELEASE LEGS
With fully adjustable 'tool-less' quick release legs it enables lightning quick one handed setup. The legs also fold away for transportation. Additional precise levelling is achieved using the feet for fine height adjustments.

VERTICAL OPERATION
Use the integrated counterbalance system to lift heavier camera setups vertically. You can achieve smooth upward and downward moves.

TRIPOD MOUNTABLE
Mount the Magic Carpet straight onto your tripod legs or tripod head using either the 1/4" UNC or 3/8" UNC thread. Both the short and long tracks come with multiple mount points to attach your tripod(s). Use one tripod in the centre or two at either end for greater stability and heavier payloads.

INTERCHANGEABLE CARRIAGE + END CAPS
The End Caps & Carriage are universally designed to be interchangeable between the short and long length tracks. This enables the flexibility to easily upgrade to a longer or shorter length track without the need of buying another full slider system. Giving you the flexibility of both portability and longer length camera moves at a fraction of the cost of other systems.

REVERSIBLE CAMERA THREAD
The Magic Carpet comes with a reversible thread so you can quickly switch between a 3/8" UNC thread and a 1/4" UNC thread. This allows for either attaching a camera straight to the carriage or using a ballhead or tripod head for larger video cameras. Simply pull the leather tab and the screw will drop out.

Jury Commentary

We were just really impressed...What was amazing was that deep integration of form and function was really evident in the design.
It was really this seamless integration that struck us...I also like that it’s a great integration of design and engineering. You don’t see where one stops and the other starts...To do that at this kind of price point- that’s just where design wins.
