Session, a recently formed San Francisco based lifestyle brand, attempts to bring a new perspective to products with a focus on relaxation, leisure and enjoyment. Our first endeavor is in the recreational cannabis market. We noticed an apparent lack of major brands focusing on lifestyle, experience, and innovation. Our design philosophy aims to create beautiful, simple experiences that will ultimately create a new standard for [smoking] glassware products and hopefully the cannabis industry as a whole.

Without the legalization and normalization of recreational cannabis in California and other states in the US, there would never have been a shift in people's minds that make a brand like Session possible. The brand is based around our own interests - as designers and smokers, but not defined by that singular interest. We challenged ourselves to design a bong, something that has been seen as taboo for decades, and treat it with the same detail and attention we give any other consumer lifestyle product. As this market is evolving, we believe the design of the products in this space should evolve as well.

"This doesn't look like your college bong" - a quote from a participant during one of our research sessions. The Session Bong challenges the classic negative associations and promotes the benefits of a more comfortable smoking experience. Our goal was to make it approachable, contemporary, and easy to use. We have been successful in designing a product that challenges the previous perception of "bongs."

We were driven to combine all of these elements to not only create an innovative product that fits beautifully in the home, but to use design to help shift the overall aesthetics and perception of a previously stigmatized form of leisure and wellness.

The Session Bong is simple, elegant, inviting, and packed with functionality.

The tapered form is compact - only 10 inches in height - with a slanted mouthpiece ergonomically angled toward the user. The indent is intuitive as a grip and a place to put your lighter while passing. It also allowed us to create a streamlined silhouette without protruding parts. A silicone sleeve wraps the base to protect the piece, acts as a guide for the water line, and keeps it from clanking or sliding on surfaces. A silicone tab, placed around the bowl, keeps your fingers from getting burned. All these silicone pieces are interchangeable, allowing for the ability to switch out colors that suit your mood and style — new seasonal colors will become available throughout the year. We know people are concerned about breaking glass, so each bong arrives in a robustly designed package that is as desirable as the bong itself. To further safeguard the experience, we've included an extra bowl and downstem for any little accident.

Our intention was to keep the form more familiar, less intrusive, easy to hold, and yet have enough volume in the chamber for a considerably generous, clean hit.
