SPLIT reimagines the floor lamp with its refined multifunctionality; in addition to providing ambient room-filling light and a focused beam below, a magnetic connection allows part of the cantilever arm to split off from its home base and become a lantern for situations that call for a quick portable light. As a lantern, the otherwise stationary beam shows you where you're going, while diffused light illuminates where you are. The main challenge faced in creating the SPLIT lamp was to bring comfort and convenience to the home by consolidating some of the many light fixtures of the household while avoiding an attempt to disrupt individuals habits. A complementary goal was integrating the aspects of convenience while keeping them visually restrained like the simple cantilevered lamps that influenced it. In other words, the goal was to create a lamp that adapts to its environment and its users, and not the other way around. The lamp can both diffuse and focus light; when needed, it also provides these same functions as a portable lantern that is always locatable at its home base, such as in the event of a power loss or simply a quick run out to the car at night. The magnetic connection between the lantern and the cantilever arm provides a satisfying tactile experience when removing it from and attaching it to its base. Additionally, the SPLIT lamp declutters central areas of the home by providing a coat hook with its gracefully curved rear cantilever arm. This gives the base its own functionality even when the lantern is not attached, and adds visual interest when not holding your coat. The SPLIT lamp's earth tone palette and material choice of natural ash wood promote a positive user experience evoking feelings of warmth and comfort.
