Released in August 2018 over a Facebook Live video, the Cook-It-All launch set new records at Lodge for the most viewed live video in company history. Following this warm welcome to the market, the Cook-It-All was awarded "Best in Category" for Cookware and Bakeware at the annual Housewares Design Awards and won the event's first-ever Design Innovation of the Year award.
When developing the Cook-It-All, our intent was to make a single cast iron product that could serve numerous cooking functions outdoors. We worked with a variety of outdoorsmen, testing a wide array of their favorite campsite recipes. Careful attention was paid to how they interacted with the product as we gathered their feedback on performance. The Product Development team went through multiple rounds of prototypes to land on the right vessel shape, handle designs and capacity. It was sized generously enough to feed a group of people, so that food for an entire campsite could conveniently be made at one time. The two steel handles were created to make lifting safe and easy to manage when hot.
The packaging solution for the Cook-It-All needed to make a statement and set the stage for all consecutive releases. The goal was to hold true to the 123-year-old brand, while still conveying the innovative sprit the product was bringing to the outdoor market.
The process began with the selection of a full litho box to showcase full-color photographs of food inspiration and thorough communication on use. Lodge Cast Iron's bright yellow, a staple for the brand, was paired with a deep hunter green, morphing the two worlds of manufacturing and outdoors together with a rugged edge.
In order to use the packaging design as the main tool of communication, the primary panel has a single image of the Cook-It-All with both pieces of iron and the steel handles in use. The product is outlined as an illustration on the bottom right-hand corner of the carton, used to showcase use. Set off-center and on a slight tilt, the illustration offers a classic, artistic touch that leaves a lasting first impression with the consumer.
The market debut of this innovative outdoor product was paired with the phrase, 'Savor the Outdoors'. This phrase, seen on the front panel as the front flap is lifted, delivers inspiration about using the pan and encourages users to bring a sense of place to the plate.
