The Interlude seat was collaboratively developed by octogenarian inventor Roland Haertl and a team of industrial designers and engineers at Evolve Collaborative. It has been road-tested on trips to 10 countries, over more than 4 years of design refinement.
In November 2018 the project launched successfully via Kickstarter, delivering first seats to backers in January of 2019.
The Backstory
While walking the streets of Barcelona on a trip to Spain in 2013, Roland's right leg went numb. He had to quickly find a place to sit down, and could not walk comfortably again for many minutes. Pain and numbness returned after fewer than 50 more yards, and for the remainder of the trip he had to move in short intervals to minimize the pain.
Roland returned home and began to search for a lightweight travel aid that would allow him to sit when needed, and could be carried with ease. He found a promising option, took it on his next trip, but discovered many shortcomings. The chair is too much work, he thought. It should relieve his burden, not add to it. Roland began to build a wish list, started to prototype, and engaged with our team to help him bring his idea to life. Interlude was born.
Four years later, Interlude prototypes have traveled to over 10 countries and myriad museums, parks, airports, bus stations, hotels, conference halls, and outdoor events. We've had the opportunity to share the product with people of various ages and mobility needs, and have used the feedback to make decisions about size, portability, comfort, and features.
What has fueled us throughout is the enthusiasm of curious on-lookers inquiring about Interlude and taking a seat for the first time. People ask where we've taken the chair, and imagine out loud about their own adventures, or how the product could help a family member or friend. It's exciting to see that spark, and to know the product addresses real needs (and not just Roland's initial wish list).
The result is a trusted companion for peoples travels near and far. Interlude supports your day's adventures, provides you with a rest when needed, and extends your time doing what you love.
