Assignment
The assignment for experimental typography that I chose to design is an identity for the exhibition of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. The title of the exhibition is Songs of the Wanderers which is based on one of their masterpieces. The hybrid dance aesthetics of Cloud Gate integrate western classical dance and the rounded eastern movements of martial arts and tai chi.
Approach
The algorithmic design generated by Java language in Processing served as the primary visual to represent graceful movement such as in modern dance. The color scheme is selected according to the five primary colors in Chinese culture, which are turquoise, red, white, black, and gold. The duotone of colors with similar hues create a flickering visual effect that amplifies the motion of dance. The threads of the stitch binding of the brochures imitate the materiality of the dancers' free-flowing outfits, and the multiple gatefolds in the brochures draw inspiration from the name of the dance group.
Results
The identity system highlights the history and continuing significance of the dance group and contains the logo, brochure series, posters, and an interactive installation. The form of the logo symbolizes ancient Chinese stamps that were carved on materials such as wood and stones. The brochure series is packaged in a translucent sleeve with three brochures and a folded poster. The three brochures each has a specific theme: an introduction to the choreographer and founder of Cloud Gate, a selection of imagery of their performances, and an overview of the history and masterpieces of the dance group. Furthermore, the posters display the information and a brief introduction to the exhibition.
