YinengFM is the first design media made to help Chinese creatives discover, explore, and spread the values of design through interviews with professionals, live stream exhibitions, online community, and offline workshops.
YinengFM currently has branches in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Shanghai to promote and inform our audience the notion of diversity within design and culture. The conversations YinengFM discusses unite people from influential design schools and companies who have different expertise in industrial design, entertainment design, interaction design, transportation design, graphic, animation, illustration, film, etc.
The greatest challenges YinengFM faced was figuring out how to immensely impact the Chinese design industry through a communication network of designers, to nurture the audience's critical thinking, and to reveal the core values of design to the public.
There is a misconception in Chinese education where people value basic skills more than design thinking. Since most design media underestimate the importance of design thinking, many students lack the ability to develop their designs and processes. YinengFM invites designers from different industries to share their professional experiences. Students and junior designers are able to learn what design thinking is about and how it is applied in practice.
In China, Internet access is highly restricted. Designers cannot produce a good product if he/she is not exposed to different cultures around the world. YinengFM has branches in three of the top design cities: Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Shanghai. We bring in local designers to share their experiences and provide an "eye-opening" opportunity for our audience. We hope that listeners will develop their ability to think outside the box and to experience various design cultures.
There is a missing platform for designers to communicate in China. Design students are unprepared for their future careers because they lack first-hand experience and are ignorant of industrial trends. YinengFM has continuously built an online community with thousands of users in 10+ countries and has ran a couple of offline workshops in various cities to promote communication between design students and working professionals.
Due to the rote education system, Chinese students have a difficult time with critical thinking, which is essential to become an insightful designer. We try to explore different means to help our audience develop the concept of critical thinking. In most cases, we first begin a discussion on a certain topic, then we brainstorm beneficial social solutions for that topic. Finally, we invite professional designers to share their first-hand experiences.
Designers are eager to contribute to society through their skills. However, many do not know where to begin because they lack the resources. In the future, YinengFM plans to create design teams among our audience to improve social impacts, to cooperate with NGOs and enterprises, and to move design concepts closer to actualization and implementation.
Through our branding design, YinengFM shall engage and lead an ongoing exploration within the world of design. The Chinese typeface "Wenyue XinQingNian" was used as the logotype for YinengFM. The typeface originated from a title font in a 1915 magazine called "XinQingNian" (New Youth). It symbolized our pioneer spirit for wanting to advocate social development through an interactive community of new generation designers. The typography was carefully chosen with a modern and highly legible style. The overall look of the typeface represented our "decisive" personality. We developed an astronaut character, Captain Yineng, to represent our brand image because we believed in the concept of "Without Borders." In other words, we encouraged our audience to constantly question and explore who they were as a designer as well as to learn about the hidden beauties of the world. The use of black heavily appeared in our stationery design, poster, and merchandise to express the simple, modern, and pure brand identity of YinengFM.
On the other hand, all of our guests come from different design specialties. Although they share their experiences on YinengFM, they are also promoting their personal images as well as their company brands. These promotions will attract more talented designers and offer them a place to advertise their company products.
By discussing and revealing the values of design, YinengFM hopes that more people will put emphasis on the idea of original design in order to resolve China's current plagiarism predicament. In this way, we will spare no effort to contribute to the development of Chinese design industry.
