The assignment is to create a system integrating physical products and interface design to help achieve one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG)–Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal #11).
Our system Amuzi is an integrated recycling system that helps cities solve existing problems in waste management. Our mission is to create an organized, efficient, and meaningful way of recycling waste with real rewards and fun gameplay.
We provide a one place solution for waste of various materials.
We gamify the process of recycling.
We provide a simpler and more organized way for our users to recycle their waste.
We provide our users with physical rewards to motivate them.
We provide a platform for users to customize and share their creations.
We keep our users accountable by keeping their wastes on track.
Throughout the process and research of this project, there were more challenges we faced than we could count. Because the assignment was focused on Sustainable Cities, it was challenging in terms of creating a solution to tie in not only the individual but the entire city as a whole. How were we going to be able to create a system that's beneficial for the city, businesses, our competitors, manufacturers, as well as the main individual consumers? Our team needed to propose a strong case as to why the city should create a regulation/law which requires the residents to micro-sort and persuade our competitors like the waste haulers as to why our sorting process would increase their profits in the long run. Many businesses are also slowly turning towards sustainability, but many still reluctant. What would make our system more attractive?
The other primary challenge we faced was to create a product for our main consumer (the residents) to interact with our system without feeling like it's too much work. Recycling has always been a difficult process in terms of having to take their recyclable wastes to different facilities for that specific material. There is also distrust of where their recyclables actually go to because of the city's lack of funds to support a reliable sorting process. We needed to figure out a container system that wouldn't disrupt the space of residents who might live in a one bedroom apartment versus a home. Our primary goal for the user experience was to redesign the idea of recycling into something exciting and available.
Compared to other designs in this category, our three major advantages are our easy-to-use digital platform that makes waste management more accessible to our users, the gamified rewarding system that motivates our users to be more active and the accountable program that makes the recycling process beneficial to every touchpoint in our lifecycle. Our platform is easier to integrate with existing systems and services compared to most of our competitors. With pressing a button, our user can have access to our system and start their recycling journey without hassle. We are aiming to create a system that works for the variety of people from the recycling novices to the recycle experts. Our users can choose their plan or try out our system conveniently based on their needs.
We provide a playful reward system that allows our users to customize their creation or choose to use their credits to be a part of something big and impactful. We collaborate with processors and manufactures to transform wastes into recycled raw materials. Our goal is to promote the recycling manufacturing process and motivate our users at the same time. Additionally, Amuzi is designed to be a fully adaptive platform that works well with public systems and domestic users. Our system has a unique tagging system that keeps our users on track while collecting the data to help waste haulers and material processors to make more value out of waste material with less effort.
Our goal at the beginning of generating this concept was to build a smooth journey for our user and the public system via our platform. We designed our hardware and mobile application to make the complicated waste management process a piece of cake for our user. From our users' perspective, their wastes can be easily separated, stored and transited with personalized controlling and monitoring. Our users can choose or shift their current plans on Amuzi platform across all devices. Amuzi's smart container system comes with different shapes and volumes upon individuals' needs. Our container system is also specially designed for handling different waste materials. This unique system helps our users to have an organized and efficient way of managing their waste while working with our mobile platform and our mini waste stations. Our innovative waste scanner can significantly help our pro users with the micro sorting process of their waste. It also delivered a delightful user flow by providing instant feedbacks right after a simple scan. It also projects an intuitive instruction for separating the materials with additional information on it.
When considering what benefits the clients would get out of our system, our intent was to look at all aspects of what was important to them such as profitability, brand reputation, employee morale, etc. Amuzi is an independent recycling system with its potential clients as cities and product manufacturers. Why would cities choose Amuzi to reconsider their current recycling system? We can help cities cut down the cost of waste management and spare more space in local landfills by reducing the amount of solid waste that our users produce. We provide a one place solution for collecting and recovering recyclable materials. We do the job of connecting with waste haulers and processing companies. Moreover, we actively support local and global environmental organizations and non-profits with recyclable materials and creations. If using Amuzi as their main recycling system, cities can improve on spreading awareness of current recycling issues.
Why would mass production companies use Amuzi? We are consulting for them to design a creative, sustainable strategy. When purchasing recyclable raw materials from us, companies are reducing the cost of purchasing materials from virgin resources. When choosing Amuzi to dispose of their production wastes, we help them reduce the cost of waste management and meet legal obligations when disposing of specific products. As a result, companies will attract new consumers and improve employee morale by demonstrating environmental responsibility through creating a sustainable lifecycle for their products.
