As Fast Company says, the new Virgin America app "puts a travel agent in your pocket." The app gives guests a comprehensive travel companion – from booking to landing. The app provides guests with the following features that make traveling easier:
Book a flight in 60 seconds or less. The app stores preferences like preferred credit cards, companion information, seat preference, and your favorite destinations to pre-fill as much as possible and get guests on their way.
Get real-time notifications when it's time to check-in and for flight updates such as gate changes.
This app is contextually aware. It automatically shifts into "travel mode" on flight day to focus on what travelers care about most: quickly check-in, pick or upgrade seats, and store the mobile boarding pass. Guests can skip the kiosk and head straight to the gate in just a few taps.
Virgin America is the first airline to integrate with Spotify to provide destination-themed playlists. Going to Las Vegas? Get the playlist to get you in the mood on the flight.
Work & Co redesigned and developed virginamerica.com in 2014, the first responsive airline website. Because we were already providing an optimized mobile web experience to Virgin America's guests, when it came time to design and develop the app, we had to deliver a truly differentiated experience.
In an industry that often relies on web view or off-the-shelf solutions, we decided to build totally native apps for iOS and Android. This allows the app to harness the full power of the device, such as remembering personal information to streamline and personalize the experience and using contextual clues to further personalize.
For instance, the navigation was built to understand your context, adjusting the menu accordingly. If it's your day of travel, the app reacts by changing modes to show you the most critical information first – such as check-in, boarding pass, and flight alert information.
We wanted to also make this app as delightful as it was utilitarian. Virgin America's mission is to make flying fun again. In addition to all of the useful features for guests, we also designed an incredibly beautiful boarding pass. It's a screen that many people will spend the most time on – so we spent time making it as delightful as possible. Unlike most mobile boarding passes that just feature a barcode, Virgin America displays animated illustrations for the local destination to get guests even more excited for their trip.
Even though the iOS and Android apps are purely native at the user interface level, we developed a custom middle platform containing business and experience intelligence. This means that if we make one update, it pushes to both platforms. This is a highly unique approach that allowed us to develop faster and will enable easier updates and maintenance.
Just hours after it launched, Virgin America was the #1 featured app on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app has been hailed as "no ordinary airline app" by Digital Trends, the app that "puts a travel agent in your pocket" by Fast Company, and "a new generation of airline apps" by Condé Nast Traveler.
