Glint! is a retainer kit that reimagines the tedious and sterile design of current retainer care options with new friendly form and bright, fresh graphic language to encourage young teens to maintain their smile every day.
After a painful period of spending at least $3000 on wearing braces or any other orthodontic treatment, what most people are met with is a cheap plastic retainer case with very few tools and instructions on how to properly take care of their retainers. Not wearing dental retainers is directed as the primary reason people have relapse or shifting of teeth which leads for many to get braces 2 or 3 more times in their life, wasting thousands of dollars simply due to of lack of maintenance. Although there are many options currently in the market for achieving straight teeth, there are none that aims to help maintain them once you have achieved them.
Glint! is a retainer kit aimed for young teens ages 10-15 that strives to fill this hole in the market by re-imagining the tedious process as well as rebrand the outdated, sterile design of current retainer care options that remind one of grandma's old dentures in glass containers. The age when kids start to consider their image and develop a sense of self-esteem, it is often embarrassing to pull out retainers in between meals or easily clean them in public without feeling uncomfortable. A personal and friendly retainer kit with friendly packaging will excite teens in their daily lives to embody confidence with their new smile after braces.
The overall graphic language is inspired by an exclamation mark to showcase the fresh, exciting, and celebratory branding of a mundane and overlooked routine. It is meant for dentists to hand users the kit with the new retainers all together in the kit.
Just as wearing retainers are meant to be life-long, the kit itself is designed to be long lasting, in which the packaging itself serves as storage for the product line. The 6 items in the kit (retainer case, duo-headed retainer brush + holder, baking soda paste + floss cap, baking soda tablet dispenser, and refill packets) all fit in a 3.75 inch cylinder frame, taking up a compact space in your bathroom counter.
The user would peel the outer paper packaging to reveal the inner components, creating an opportunity for a 'surprise' moment. The inner side of the paper includes detailed step-by-step instructions on how to use each product. For a more interactive and detailed tutorial, users can scan a QR code that will lead to an app in which they can also track their retainer wear.
Retainer Case: The organic donut form language of the retainer case is friendly, inviting, and draws users to the kit. Portable and designed to fit in the palm of your hand, the retainer case sits on top of the cylinder stand and can easily hold a pair of retainers as well as an adequate volume of water for soaking and cleaning. By being on top, it is meant for the dentist to place the new retainers inside and not have to worry about packaging the rest of the products when handing it off to the user.
Duo-headed retainer brush + holder: Often, people use their daily toothbrush to clean retainers which wears them out. A separate dual headed brush with tapered bristles for internal crevasses on one side, and broader bristles for outer surfaces on the other help remove plaque and tartar in all areas.
Baking soda paste + Floss cap: One of the key innovations in the product line is the 2-in-1 baking soda paste packaging. This packaging brings baking soda into an easy squeezable paste which isthe best way to clean and deodorize retainers as using toothpaste may contain abrasives that actually weakens retainers. The cap to the paste doubles as a refillable container that can contain 30m of floss. Each time you buy floss or a toothpaste, you're throwing away the plastic container and cap that comes with it. By having a refillable cap which can contain floss, not only is the user reminding to floss while taking care of retainers but also being more mindful by reducing the amount of plastic that is wasted.
Tablet dispenser + refill packets: If a retainer is not in the mouth, it should be kept moist in water with a bit of baking soda. The refillable dispenser is a pen that dispenses dime-sized baking soda tablets infused with odor eliminating fragrances through a simple spring click mechanism. In the kit, there are three refill packets that contain 35 tablets, providing enough for 3 months.
In the end, glint! hopes to bring that extra sparkle and confidence in one's smile through a fungraphic language and fresh, mindful packaging that allows one to properly maintain their daily routine.
