Braibook is the eReader for blind. Is a small portable device that allows blind users read all kinds of digital content.
Conventional eReaders for blind users like the Braille Lines are big devices, generally stationary, so a table and specific conditions are needed to be used. Other alternatives like braille books are huge, the offer is reduced and you need both hands to read on it. Apart from these main options, blind people normally decides to go with audio books, a good tool that can be extremely useful in some cases, but the offer from audiobooks is way more reduced and limited than from ebooks for example, as well as being limiting (you cannot do many other activities at the same time since you lose another all external audio inputs.
Blind users need tools that let them develop multiple activities at the same time. Their daily life is full of situations where they need to make use of other senses that replace the sight: When walking, a cane is always needed in to guide themselves, and having references from space. Their interaction with the environment is also based in sound feedback: traffic lights, cars, inside the metro... This implies that they need to pay attention the whole time, without intrusive/ devices that could distract, becoming a big challenge to design for them.
What makes it unique:
Braibook gives the opportunity to blind people for the first time to read anytime and anywhere without barriers. Users, will not need to draw on audio books that reduce the sense of the environment, which can be dangerous since audio feedback is the most important input they have. It will be natural the way a reader uses it, manipulated with only one hand, no support surface needed, not specific conditions to use it, you are free. This is the real value of knowledge: being free, available, opened and accessible for everyone.
