"Type High" was conceived through research conducted in the Herb Lubalin Center for Design and Typography. Working with Archive Curator Alexander Tochilovsky we assembled a collection of typographic specimens and ephemera to use as a frame work creating dimensional design and typography. We then took this frame work into the studio where we allowed material and craft processes to inform the completion of the piece. Building the sculptures ourselves was a pivotal part of the design process and allowed for a more intimate connection with the form and its relationship to the body.

Letterforms are archetypes of meaning and structure, the architecture of how we understand our visual landscape. What happens when letterforms cease to function as descriptors and become part of that visual landscape? "Type High" investigates the application of type as form; image and sculpture, separate from the traditional associations of words and language. We think of these as instances of dimensional type due to the foregrounding of the form in the space around it not because of its construction. "Type High" utilizes these moments to create a space for experiencing typography.
