It is with much gratitude and admiration that we celebrate the jury alumni members of the Core77 Design Awards.
Dan is President, CEO, Principal Designer and cofounder of Whipsaw Inc., a highly acclaimed design firm in Silicon Valley, California. Whipsaw designs products and experiences for companies around the world, from Fortune 100’s to startups.
Dan is a hands-on designer and directs the strategic and conceptual direction of most client accounts. Throughout his prolific career Dan has designed hundreds of highly successful products ranging from baby bottles to supercomputers. Fast Company magazine selected Dan as one of “The 100 Most Creative People in Business 2014”, calling him “design’s secret weapon”. Fast Company also ranked Whipsaw among the ‘Top 5 design firms in the world’ in 2009 and they featured Dan as a ‘Master of Design’ in 2005.
Dan frequently lectures on design topics at universities and conferences, including being keynote at the Australia Design Forum; keynote at the Wuxi Design Conference ; keynote and Chairman of the IDSA National Conference Collideoscope (’02), and he was a United Nations Design Delegate to China in ’98. Prior to cofounding Whipsaw in 1999, Dan was the President of Frogdesign where he designed many notable products and led the company for ten years. Before joining Frogdesign in 1989 he was a lead designer at Henry Dreyfuss Associates. In the early eighties Dan interned with design master George Nelson. He also interned at Hewlett Packard and Richardson Smith (later became Fitch). Dan graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture and Art in 1982.
Stuart Harvey Lee is the Founder of Prime Studio, a Product + Brand design consultancy based in NYC. He started his career as a Mechanical Engineer working in a steelworks before discovering his passion for Industrial Design whilst earning his Masters Degree at the Royal College of Art.
He moved to New York in 1991 and cut his teeth working at both Smart Design and Able Design before founding Prime Studio in 1998. At Prime, Stuart is fortunate to work with a wide range of clients from global companies like Unilever and Bayer to startups like Harry’s and Welly. Most importantly he relishes designing products which make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.
When he’s not designing Stuart can either be found challenging himself to ride the hills of the Hudson Valley on his favorite bike or desperately trying to cultivate his asparagus bed.
Joe Hebenstreit is the CEO of Shaper, a human-involved robotics company focused on dissolving barriers between human intuition and machine tool automation. Shaper’s Origin is a handheld CNC router that employs computer vision and real-time positional motor control to auto-correct for imprecise hand movements and enable entirely new fabrication possibilities. Prior to Shaper, Joe led the Product Design & Engineering team responsible for Glass hardware development at Google X. He began his engineering career in the automotive industry before earning his product development stripes at frog while tackling projects across a wide range of industries including medical devices, wearables, home appliances, industrial equipment and consumer electronics. His reputation for shepherding new technology out of the prototyping lab and into consumer products led him to Amazon’s Lab126 in its earliest days of hardware development. At Amazon, he helped usher enabling technologies like touch interfaces and front-lighting to generations of Kindle e-readers.
Jonathan is a Senior Industrial Designer based in Toronto, Ontario. After 5 years of working in San Francisco as a core part of frog's industrial design team, Jonathan moved to Canada in early 2020 to pursue a new adventure with e-commerce powerhouse, Shopify. His experience as a design consultant spans across leading brands and start-ups in the tech, retail, automotive, government, and healthcare industries. As a part of Shopify’s budding hardware division, Jonathan works at the forefront of commerce innovation, bridging the gap between digital and physical in the retail arena.
Born and raised in the Northern Virginia/ DC area, Jonathan is an east-coast creative looking to make lasting, meaningful products and experiences. Though his expertise lies in physical products, he believes that excellent, culture-shifting design comes from the convergence of multiple disciplines and diverse perspectives.
Jim Kraimer is Director of Industrial Design for EMEA & China at Crown Equipment Corporation, which is a leading manufacturer of lift trucks and related products and services. Jim likes to dig deep into research and leverage new technologies that reimagine a new user experience. A key example is Crown’s QuickPick Remote® -- the world’s first glove-controlled order picker vehicle -- which is ushering in a new era of game-changing automation. Crown has won over 100 major international design awards and was recognized by Fast Company Magazine as Thirty Companies that Get Design. Prior to Crown, Jim developed futuristic products for Electrolux’s visionary Concept Design Team, and also worked at design consultancies in the USA and Germany. Jim holds 18 utility patents and has been a juror for Core77, iF Design and China Red Star Design awards. He studied Industrial Design under the tutelage of Paul Down, FISDA, at the University of Notre Dame.
Christopher joined Ammunition in 2008, and has played an integral role within the studio’s ID group to create meaningful product experiences for clients such as Beats by Dre, Polaroid, Skype and Sky, as well as numerous startups. In his current role, Christopher focuses on managing Ammunition’s ID team, providing ongoing project leadership, coordination, creative direction and mentoring.
Nicolas joined Ammunition in 2014. As a senior designer, he works closely with clients to help shape ideas into elegant, manufacturable solutions. Notable examples of his work include the UNICEF Kid Power Band, the Polaroid Hoop camera, and the Ammunition X Gantri Gio lighting collection.
Originally from a small town in France, Nicolas grew up finding inspiration and beauty in ordinary objects which eventually led him to pursue a career in industrial design. Prior to joining Ammunition, he worked with companies including Decathalon, Electrolux, and frog design. Nicolas graduated with a master’s degree in industrial design from ISD in France. His work has been featured in TIME magazine and was recognized by IDEA, Fast Company, Core77 and the Halo design awards.
Early on, Kiefer started his career as a professional remodel contractor in Toronto, where he developed his skill using tools and equipment ranging from hand tools to large scale heavy machinery.
When Instagram was in its infancy, he started a page (@toolaholic) where he could discuss tools and techniques amongst the community to better the industry. This quickly blossomed into more detailed media and articles, landing him partnerships with some of the largest names in the industry. He currently works with leaders in power tools and construction products such as Milwaukee, Dewalt, Festool, Fein, Makita, and many more, developing and testing new tools and jobsite solutions. He also writes for publications such as Fine homebuilding and Canadian contractor magazine.
His media company serves an as outlet to show the world the latest in power tools, and also to product detailed content to help our younger generation learn more about tools and techniques.
Anton Ljunggren is a Director of Global Design and Innovation at PepsiCo where he works on building new businesses to unlock behavior change in health and environmental sustainability. Prior to PepsiCo Anton was the head of design at, clean energy startup, BioLite, bringing electricity, lighting and clean air cooking to hundreds of thousands of users in emerging markets. He also worked at frog and Smart Design where he designed products and experiences for companies including Cisco, Disney, Google, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Nike, Panasonic and Skype. His work has garnered global recognition winning awards including from CES, Core77, FastCo, IDSA, IF, Spark and Red Dot.
Andy Logan is the Founder and Creative Director at AWOL Company, a small but mighty Southern California-based product design agency. AWOL specializes in award-winning design that challenges assumptions, grows market share, and delights users. A veteran of California’s top consultancies, Andy’s 20-year design career resume includes both BMW/Designworks and frog design, leading creative teams to tackle challenges in the Consumer, Industrial, and Medical categories.
With a strategic design philosophy, he has helped businesses as varied as HP, Nike, John Deere, Proctor & Gamble, Turtle Beach, Welch Allyn, AutoDesk, and SanDisk better connect with their customers through amazing design. Most recently, he installed a kick-ass zip line in his backyard for his three daughters.
Sam Lucente works as the CDO and Co-Founder of Cookbrite, a food business in the technology industry. As a designer, he focuses on bringing world class design approaches to bear on complex problems for society, organizations and the design profession at large. Sam is also Principal of Lucente Design. He previously worked as VP of Design for HP Worldwide, Netscape's UX Director and head of IBM's Strategic Design where he led many ThinkPad design efforts.Selected as one of Fast Company's Masters of Design and BusinessWeek's Champions of Innovation, Sam has judged design competitions worldwide. His work has been recognized with major design awards and is in permanent collection at the SFMOMA, the NY MoMA, the Smithsonian National Design Museum and other collections. Sam studied computer science extensively. Prior to that, he graduated magna cum laude from the College of Design, Architecture and Art at the University of Cincinnati.
Natasha specializes in human-centered design research and strategy. She is passionate about creating services, experiences, environments, and products that help people live better, healthier, and more fulfilled lives in a rapidly changing world.
In 2017, Natasha founded the design and innovation strategy consultancy Blumline, where she and her teams blend creative and scientific research methodologies to catalyze radical and compassionate innovation. Blumline's goal is to shift perspectives and behaviors around ambiguous landscapes like the future of health and wellness, the age of autonomy, and mindfulness in the digital age.
Natasha's service design experience rests at the intersection of mobility, wellness, health, hospitality, and retail for clients including Postmates, Volkswagen, Livongo, Singapore Airlines, Lincoln, and emerging brands in the boutique hotel industry.
Greg McNamara is an award-winning designer and creative leader.
He is a founder of Mast, a collaborative product studio that crafts interwoven experiences. They create cohesive product experiences through physical objects and services, that aim to be transformative. At Mast, Greg focuses on working fusing technology and material innovation with his passion for brand storytelling. Recent work includes working on a new paradigm for a connected experience design for Lexus, a wearable platform and branding for Loopd, crafting a new design language for Pearl Izumi's running team, and designing headphones and interfaces for a VUI platform for OV.
Previously Greg was the global head of design & innovation at Sol Republic. Greg led the design team from day one, defining the brand with a small team and shaping product strategy through the growth phase to build a globally successful brand with a passionate following. Greg has been part of teams at Astro Studios, One & Co, Lunar, and Frog Design over the years. Before working in consumer electronics, he was nurturing his enduring love of sneakers as a footwear designer; at North Face in the advanced concepts group, and for New Balance.
Afshin Mehin is the founder of Card79, a creative studio based in San Francisco. The studio focuses on tackling complex and future-facing projects, working on everything from Brain Computer Interfaces to Autonomous Vehicles for agile Startups like Postmates as well as large companies like Amazon and Lululemon. Afshin’s experience blends the old and new, having worked for traditional furniture designers like BarberOsgerby and Terence Conran as well as futuristics institutions such as M.I.T. ’s Media Lab Europe and Elon Musk’s Neuralink.
Peter Michaelian is head of design at Dolby Laboratories for products and experiences. Through industrial and environmental design, he and his team help to bring advanced audio and visual experiences to the world.
Previously, he served as creative director at frog in San Francisco. Michaelian received undergraduate and master’s degrees from The Cooper Union in New York City and taught as an adjunct professor of design at The Cooper Union, University of California-Berkeley and California College for the Arts. He is named on 58 patents and 25 international design awards.
