Pickle Nest

This project is named "Pickle Nest". It is a solution to deal with food waste nowadays, which is aimed to encourage people to pickle their extra vegetables and scraps they think they won't eat them for a long time.

The problem I address is food waste. Food is the largest single source of waste in the U.S. More food ends up in landfills than plastic or paper. Research shows that up to 50% of food waste produced in the home, among which, vegetable waste takes up the largest proportion (45%).

There are two types of potential vegetable waste, which is food scraps produced while preparing the meal and left vegetables that won't eat for following weeks.

I want to use traditional storage method-pickling-to encourage people to pickle their left scraps and vegetables.

However, traditional pickle jar cannot help people do this job easily. If people use traditional pickle jar, it means every time people have vegetables, they need to remake brine and use a new jar which is waste time and jar. So I want to redesign pickle jar for people to do this job easily. I want the jar to allow people keep adding new scraps into one jar and also easy for people to recognize the date they adding them.

I design a structure inside the pickle jar that can divide the space of jar into several parts and also allow brine flow through each space. The wood lid of the Pickel Nest has some basic information of pickling such as "preserve at room temperature (18-26 ?), put in a cool & dry environment, don't open during 1st pickling (4-5 days)". The wall of theglass container has two different finishing. The middle of the wall is frosted, which can increase friction while holding it.
