Bridging the gap between elevated simplicity and extended capability, the TK-02 unit is an advanced "super-automatic" espresso machine, delivering an unparalleled level of precision, customization, and quality from whole bean coffee, while brewing the full range of café favorites like espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, Americanos, and true drip coffee.
All of this is packaged in a sleek, category-defining iOT device that is unusually compact, bringing a whole slew of new features and functionality to the table, while redefining what is possible in a small form-factor.
The machine has a large touchscreen and a mechanical milk-frothing knob. A front-loading water tank, waste bin, and drip tray allow the TK-02 to fit into precious counter space without side clearance, which is key in many smaller home kitchens.
Other noteworthy features include a barista-grade scale; automatic grind adjustment; a larger group head allowing up to 16 grams of ground coffee per drink; and a high-resolution, 5-inch capacitive-touch display.
The accompanying TK-02 app provides a unique level of drink customization, saving and syncing your custom drink and bean profiles to your machine. Adjustable drink parameters include grind size, dosing, shots, added water and milk volumes, and temperature.
The app also handles onboarding, automates descaling, and tracks your drink history. Because the TK-02 is an iOT device, a cloud-based data architecture ensures that profiles and recipes created on either the app or the machine sync to your account and remain available anywhere.
This robust, persistent experience allows for precision and consistency across multi-member households, and multi-machine sites. Through the optimized layout of its larger group head, high-capacity heater block, and larger bean hopper, this package delivers category-defining features in an iconic, asymmetric geometry.
On the maintenance side, the TK-02 intelligently senses when to run rinse and deep clean cycles, and espresso pucks are neatly arranged for easy removal from a full bin. In addition, careful consideration has been given to situational alerts; when and how they appear, what animations and guidance is provided, and where they are located (app or device screen).
The clear, functional design of the app-UI and the machine-UI compliment each other, and make the selection of customized drink experiences seamless, whichever screen you're interacting with.
As an expression of intelligent connectivity, this architecture is ideally suited to both sophisticated and novice coffee aficionados, and represents a truly modern expression of the super-automatic category.
Coffee is a highly-personal and ritualistic beverage, and the experience around it is a cherished part of daily life. Whether it's using the wake-up settings in the morning, using a quick-select choice from the capacitive touch display, or brewing a highly-customized drink saved in your personal profile, every interaction with the TK-02 is a carefully-considered, deeply satisfying moment. Every touch-point, from the purchase flow to the out-of-box and on-boarding experience, is approached from the perspective of a charming, knowledgeable, and deeply considerate friend.
The barista-grade system architecture ensures that this remains true whether you are a single home user, a shared multi-profile family group, or a site-manager responsible for multiple installations. (And for the most complex multi-unit situations, there are unique affordances for managers to control profile behaviors for walk-up service). Within this environment, each user can have full control over a range of unique profiles controlling grind, dosing, temperature, and drink-types including true drip coffee, plus the convenience of a portable, refrigerator-friendly milk carafe. And once established in your regular usage patterns, the system provides continuous feedback on drink counts, water, waste, and maintenance cycles. Whether you're that individual user looking to schedule your machine warmup and send your drink order from your phone before arising, or you're a head-of-household managing a machine for multiple family members, the TK-02 can handle it.
The history of Terra Kaffe's products is anchored in the founder's rich background and deep appreciation of urban architecture, craft movements, design history, global coffee culture, as well as his on-going commitment to the artisan roaster community. As a first offering, the TK-01's quality was recognized immediately by its introduction into the MOMA Design Store catalog. Building on that success and recognition, the company reached out with a new charter: take the best elements of the TK-01, add in unique functionality, and wrap everything in an elevated, category-defining look. Specifically, an aesthetic that would fuse minimalism, modernism, elegance, and an elevated user experience, with a nod to the Bauhaus & Die Brücke design movements.
Additionally, this new package would need to be expressed in a smaller footprint, with a larger display, using front-access doors exclusively (while still leaving room for seating a milk carafe on-machine, rather than on-counter). In taking on this challenge, we proposed a unique and iconic asymmetric design that accommodated all the product requirements, dramatically improved usability, and changed the way people experience the super-automatic category. The immediate impact of this design approach was reflected in the quick sell-out of the pre-order offering, and the unusually fast ramp-up to the initial production run.
One of the main design goals was to steer away from the conventional aesthetic codes of countertop super-automatic machines. These are for the most part based on notions about how barista-level equipment looks and functions, where the emphasis is placed on competing forms, complex faceting, aggressive protrusions, and multiple interaction points. Thus the overall effect is to both signal complexity, and create unnecessary confusion around usage of the external controls. In contrast, the TK-02 consciously strips down the experience to its most elemental building blocks with precision and clarity: a housing, a screen, and a nozzle.
