Developing Loog’s first stringless instrument involved many initiatives and developments in the last few years. The decision regarding the type of product and the right time to launch it was carefully analyzed.
The project began by defining the instrument's functional attributes, prioritizing factors such as key number, width, sound quality, and overall functionality. To achieve this, we delved into market research, particularly focusing on the children and entry-level keyboard segments, while also exploring the historical roots of the instrument. This approach aligns seamlessly with Loog's penchant for subtly referencing classical instruments, appealing to both adult users and parents alike. In this stage we also looked deeply at ergonomics, with extensive investigation into key dimensions and layout, drawing insights from leading brands' practices.
Throughout the conceptualization phase, we explored diverse design directions, ranging from vintage keyboard aesthetics to playful, toy-inspired motifs. Ultimately, we arrived at a concept distinguished by its simplicity, charm, and innate familiarity, achieved through a meticulous balance of materials and colors that harmonize effortlessly with Loog's existing product lineup.
Upon validating the design, we embarked on prototype development and documentation, maintaining open lines of communication with Loog’s manufacturing partners in China. Rigorous testing ensued, involving both children and professional musicians, while factory feedback prompted refinements to enhance manufacturing efficiency.
Following the successful launch of the product via Kickstarter, additional features were incorporated based on community feedback, including MIDI support and Sustain pedal and Octave shifter control compatibility, further enriching the instrument's functionality and appeal.
